Just had this idea while playing the Battlefleet: Gothic videogame:
With the recent highly successful GW boardgames (Calth, Deathwatch, Silver Tower) in mind, imagine a new one that would be something like Imperial pirates vs Eldar pirates, and then imagine that the models that came with it also served as an introduction to two new (to GW in case of Corsairs) factions: Rogue Traders and Eldar Corsairs.

I need your opinions on this, people.

I would love it if GW made an Imperial scum / pirate / rogue trader faction. Until that you are stuck with using the inquisitor codex as a stand in

They would be the equivalent to the IG, but crappier.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

I think there is a lot of awesome stuff that could come from that - however it doesn't fit in the super-huge-models-tournament-forever gaming mode of 40K at the moment.

It would fit nicely with an RT era game or 2nd edition etc. Maybe it would serve as an interesting IG choice for an ally (a group of IG pirates on jetbikes with unique/interesting wargear or some cool rules?).

The idea is neat, but without an army to fit into nicely I don't know that it would get the GW thumbs-up. As nice as their board games are currently - they're all serving double duty as a way to get more miniatures into players' hands. A "pirate" theme could be cool for a narrative campaign though.

Ork pirates, Eldar Corsairs, Imperial/Scum pirates, Imperial Navy (neat way to convert some IG), and Inquisition, Harlequins/Dark Eldar etc. Lots of potential there for some cool story ideas...maybe do a Necromunda-esque small skirmish game.

If GW went back to the skirmish-level version of 40K, I could see the two factions work. But in the modern day with Baneblades, Knights and the likes running around - it'd be a real stretch to make them useful.

Now, if GW could devise a Broadsides and Boarding Party sort of game where you have a couple smaller ships duking it out at close range that ends in boarding actions in 28mm scale, that might be a game that gets some attention.

It never ends well

Idk. Harlequins and admech work, and they've recently added genestealer cults. I reckon a RT and corsairs faction could work.

There is a 'boarding action' mini-campaign available in the Horus Heresy stuff - it's great fun. Strongly recommend giving it a try!
