Alright, instead of gaking up the comp thread, I'll do this.

I'm painting the WHW exclusive command tanks for the monthly painting competition. Buttery, being awesome, sent them to me about a year ago, I finally feel I'm ready to paint them.

Please offer your opinions on the following;

Land raider guns: back door or front door? Box art says back door, logic says you'd lose the ability to debus under fire effectively (though I suppose you could always use the front door)

Rhino/LR side doors: magnetized? I am going to paint the internals, want to be able to see them. This is also a huge pain in the angus though.

Rhino: I have a damocles command interior, but it would mean one side door is superfluous, do I use it on this or just make a damocles as well for a lesser company?

My thoughts. LR doors at the front, magnetize all the things, no damocles interior.

Magnets are so satisfying.

Magnets are good idea.

Otherwise why dont you mix and match pieces to make multiple command vehicles.

also use bling parts from things like scribord to really ham them up.

Yeah, fluff-wise, they would be using the assault ramp when actually in action. That's what it's for.

Historically, regular Land Raiders have had their guns on the rear hatch, Crusaders and Redeemers on the front. It's largely just down to personal preference, though.

That is what swayed me, if they were exiting from the side, the guns would be pointing sideways presumably.

Box art > rule of cool > logic

I do pick up requests.
But the understanding is it might take a while to do.

The assembly manual depicts the guns on the back door position, but if you look at most recent GW studio models (like newer variants in codex), the guns are placed on the front doors. It makes much more sense to me, since it wouldn't be much fun getting out of the land raider and being evaporated, or trying to duck in to a LR while returning enemy fire.

From a purely modelling perspective, placing the guns on the back doors gives you more front canvas to work with and is better for photography, if you have, for example, nice FW doors. This is because if you place the guns in the front, you can't see the back doors when you take an angled front photograph.

From a gaming perspective, I think placing the gun on the back doors is advantageous, as the further back you place the guns, the more your firing arcs will cover (by a tiny tiny bit, but every bit counts, no? )
