Greetings. Getting back into 40k after an absence since 3rd edition I've been lurking this board for a while now. I really enjoy your tactics section. Now I know that 40k can get pretty unforgiving when it comes to a certain level of competetiveness. I noticed this hasn't changed when I fielded my old army and got pretty much steamrolled in most games. Well. The last weeks I am list building and reading SW tactics on several boards and try to come up with something that is fun to play and won't go down too easy. It doesn't need to dominate but be competetive and a good start to get back into 40k. I guess it will cost me several hundered euros I don't want to invest into paperweights. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me creating an outline of a basic 1850 points to build upon.

So here is one of my favourite ideas. A list built around Bjorn, Heralds of the Great Wolf and a Culexus. I plan to avoid what cost me a lot of games - not having first turn. This is an effective 3+ seize. All those seem to be quite powerful by themselves. In recent games I used Bjorn a lot and while he always dies, he draws a lot of attention. However I don't play Drop Pods yet and having him in reserve I think greatly adds to his use.

The Heralds seem to be a resilient melee unit with all their buffs. They are accompanied by a Runepriest from the Wyrdstorm Brotherhood. The second one rides with the Wolf Guard bikers. The idea about the WG bikers unit is actually copied from the tactics section. A battle brother from the forums said to use this for Warp Spider harassment and I really dig this idea. It's a cool unit I plan to field it at least once. Probably loaded with more melta bombs. The third fast melee unit is a pack of Thunderwolf Cavalry. I'm not sure about this. It is maybe to small to make an impact. It probably lacks a Wolf Guard Battle Leader.

The Murderfang will drop turn 1 into the enemys face. Just as the humble Callidus will be starting next to the opponents warlord, shock and awe style.

The Stormfang Gunship is meant to be a counter against fliers and long range fire support otherwise. It will stay in the landing pads safe harbour of 4++ for the first turn/until AA is dealt with and then hunt down fliers or zoom around messing up stuff. Maybe a Skyhammer ML instead of Multimeltas?

What do you think?

I like the list. Although I'm not talking from experience. In the same situation as you looking goes one space wolf experience to advise before lay down the cash.

In my view bikes are too white scars to be a feature in a space wolves list, i can see why youve taken them as they make the wolf guard very very playable. But if I were you are try and stick with the drop pod theme a little more and drop in your troops. Think three drop pods is the magical number so you can drop two turn one.

Not sure about he Stormwolf and landing pad. That's 335 points. Drop that and take the bikes away and you could replace it with an imperial knight for long range fire power and sky fire. Just my thoughts and again they come from 0 experience with space wolves.

Thank you for commenting. A knight would indeed be a strong alternative to the Stormfang. Maybe an exchange of Thunderwolves and Stormfang for a Knight and a Wolf Guard combi suicide squad in a Drop Pod instead of the bikers would be favourable.

However my recent thought about the list is exchanging the Thunderwolves in favour of two mounted Wolf Guard Battle Leaders to go with the Heralds. I'd like to keep the bikers and the Stormfang though. Their style gets me.

Don't drop the thunderwolves, they're our #1 unit in the codex practically. And put a stormshield on the powerfist guy, you'll want him alive.

Drop the deathwinds on the pods, you won't need them.

Can I assume all your characters are going to form a unit and make a deathstar? If so, just make sure your enemy has other threats to worry about so it's not an army against 6 characters.

Also, the bikes are fine. They can be objective grabbers, harassers, and assaulters.

Nice list. for the Wolftime!

Thanks for your thoughts. Indeed Thunderwolves are the strongest part of the force. I will run one Wyrdstorm Priest in each bike squad so they can use Living Storm from different angles (e.g. directional void shield measurement). Thunderwolves go alone so they don't lose fleet. This is four units at beginning/five in the first round which each poses a serious threat to almost anything. I'm still not sure about about the flier, especially with that new Death from the Skies addon I don't own yet. But last game I was seriously harmed by a Dakkajet and could do nothing against it. So I guess some way of anti air now has to be part of any list. The Deathwind launchers were meant for horde control. Three template weapons and Tempestas should get it done though. Maybe change Stormwolf and meltabombs to Stormfang for the pie plate.

The army is assuming more and more solid shape, very good.

Fanfic time!

Still half asleep the ancient glides down from orbit, resting in several layers of steel, his battle plan already made up. Almost slumbering he tracks the events of the battle hundereds of miles below. A gathering of priests and decorated heroes races toward the enemy lines. Shielded by a wing of Krakendooms personal guard. Is this still a dream? Engir. The old ones memories show a bloodthirsty lad, still wearing the marks of a Blood Claw. The memorandum names a Lord. At ground the events are unfolding well. The Runepriest shield the datachment in a gale-force veil, gathering their might, preparing the thunderstorm. The enemy is in turmoil. Rather than preparing for the impact their lines are in disturbance. Something went wrong. A favour of the Lords of Balisarius. Months ago strings were pulled and an Assassin unleashed. Moments ago the head of the foe has been ripped off. Now their heart is for the wolves to feast on. The strike force will arrive in only a few minutes when a pod decends amids the enemy lines. Flames blaze and bodies fly. The mad one has arrived. His fury unbound, the enemies find themselves between hammer and anvil. Robbed of their lead their fire diverts between the multiple threats and while the hammer hits, the veteran guard falls back harassing anyone trying to escape - rounding them up like fatstock for the butcher. Meanwhile the air support has cleared the sky. The enemy tries to gather their remaining forces. Now the old one breaks through the clouds crashing into their last stand. The blast doors open and the Dreadnaught is fully awake. This is far from a dream - the eternal nightmare. Blood and glory await!
