Hey I'm looking to start a legion force and besides two breacher squads (so I can order those ultramarines shields when they come out) I'm not sure what to put into it! And advice would be great, what units/rites of war/hqs work best etc

Legion Champions with Legatine Axes are a fun cheap HQ.
Invictarii are awesome and fit the Breacher theme well.

For UM, they use MSU best, due to their Interlocking Tactics. Even if a unit can't hurt the target, still shoot at it, if only to help a better unit do it.

If you use the Logos Lectora, I always take the MoS over the Damocles Rhino.

partially true. While they CAN do MSU, it would still be a bad idea in a 30k setting. taking a 'normal' sized army with an extra recon squad or two for painting targets would be the most "MSU" i'd go with a UM army.

whatever you think looks cool/fits the theme your going for. If your going for lots of shields, get 2 full breacher squads where everyone has power swords (UM can do this). back them up with a couple of smaller tactical squads (2 15-20, or 3-4 10-man squads) from there, get some rapiers or other form of AT along side your big stuff.

also, recon armour is over rated, I say stick with power armour, snipers, and a vox.

for my planned ultramarine army, I plan to go full Roman legion with them:

Foot slogging 3 units of 20 breachers all with powerswords, artificer armor and melta bombs on the sargs
Unit of 10 invictarus, with 1 thunder hammer
1 MoS, 1 legion centurion with leg. Axe and a shield.
2 units of 2 legion quad motar batteries with shatter shells
1 unit of 2 legion basilisks,
3 legion apothecaries.
And Guilliman himself leading the charge.

The artillery hammers everything from afar as my lines advance to sweep the enemy units away.

Maybe not the best way to go about doing things, but it sounds like a really cool idea to execute

Are destroyers a decent choice? They seem expensive even when compared to 30k in general

Destroyers are expensive but rather fun when done right

generally, yes. They can be decent in a rhino, however they really shine (with their short range guns) when they have a decent amount of movement.

Yes - especially the Moritats.
If you do go the jump pack route, make sure to fill the squad to maximum capacity. It will be cheaper ppm, and the mobility never hurt anyone. Just remember that they are still just as squishy as any normal marine.

Are the fulmentarus too expensive for what they do? Also are invictarus in a pod a good way of doing things?

No, Fulmentarii are a fantastic unit, but I normally use a squad of five with cyclones rather than a full ten man unit. Otherwise they're too expensive

while good, when you give them all whirlwinds they do tend to be on the stupidly expensive side

Cool as I really want to run a ten man unit. My 1k list is
Legion champion with artificer armour and legatine axe
Two ten man breacher squads with power sword and artificer armour on sergeant
Five fulmentarus with cyclone missile launchers

I'm going to be running Guilliman in a Spartan with a full squad of Invictarii Suzerains. Might not be the most effective use of points, but god damn it is going to look good when painted.

Are you going to convert your own suzerain?
