Hi Guys
Added a fourth winged hivetyrant to my playing list and I haven't even played more than a 1500 point game atm. Was looking at all the nid formations and there's a lot that need winged Hivetyrants especially the living tide formation that needs at least 3. You can make these as cheap or as expensive as you want. For example with two sets of twin linked devourers and that's all. Or you can kit it up with bonuses and artifacts. My question to you all is is it worth taking a close combat weapon such as a bonesword and lashwhip, or the reaper, and taking a ranged weapon like TLD instead of taking scything talons. You lose one more attack in close combat but you get 6 strength 6 shots from range, or a stranglehorn or heavy venom cannon round. What are your thoughts?

2 twin linked devourers with brainleech worms + electroshock grubs is pretty much the only loadout you should run.
I think there may be an argument for a cc-oriented flyrant if you run the formation with the gargoyles?

To be honest there's one competitive way to run flyrants. In a friendly game a CC weapon can work fine, but Devourers are by FAR the best option available. Since fliers have to land for a turn before they can assault, they will always get shot up and it's therefore not worth it. Just keep them in the air and shooting. And at that point, a Devourer is better than a barbed strangler or venom cannon as it actually has the rate of fire to threaten vehicles, while being high S and still averaging more hits than the blast weapons. The only thing Id reccomend is adding electroshock grubs for 10 moneys, giving you a haywire template without losing a gun.

With wing you can stay hidden in first turn and wait till 2nd turn then 'jump' and assault with lash whip and bone sword with warlord and look in your opponent face is priceless.

The look is priceless if he doesn't know your hive tyrant is there, doesn't shoot it, advances into threat range, and does so with a non-assault unit... Which requires him being an idiot. A flyrant has no invuln save, eternal warrior, or frag grenades. He will get absolute punked by any dedicated assault unit, and while on the ground will get his face wrecked in shooting. Honestly a CC flyrant is terrible in anything other than a friendly fluffy game. And why would you make that guy, the most vulnerable one by far, your warlord?

Pre-game
Made sure bring your own huge massive ruins that can blocked whole Flytrant and "Hidden" as in out of LOS so no one can shoot at glide Flytrant. Made sure the building is about 18" away from enemy deployment edge and place genestealer or lictor to secure that building.
Flyrant jump to that building and get ready for next turn.
Assault the weakness and ensure stay in close combat so nobody can shoot at flyrant. Repeat.
I did killed tau warlord with first try. 4 hits and 1 ID before he can strike back. I am not scare of overwatch.
Genestealer destroyed tau hammerhead before it can do anything. Poor tau player.

All valid points, but like someone said earlier, I would only run a close combat FHT with 30 gargoyles as a meat shield giving it a 2+ look out sir, then on top of that it still get's it 4+ jink save and if you combine that with a venom or malanthope you get a 2+ covrr save. My question for you now then is if you're using the skytyrant formation with all these gargoyles do you go LWBS and a gun? OR LWBS and Scything Talons? T
Thanks

Part lash whip and bone sword and part brain leech dev of course!
Personally I like Hypertoxic node formation better because I can take miasma cannon and scything talons with egrub on wing.
ID on 6s and always wound on 2s. Scything talons treat just like bone swords.
Attack on high cost non-vehicle targets.
Or because I were tried of double brain leech dev Flytrant and try somethings fun.. Heh.

You're best off going full-in with shooting, or with assault. Going half-and-half only gets you a tyrant that doesn't do either particularly well.
A regular flying tyrant is able to swoop, and make full use of its guns while being hard to hit. However it has trouble getting into assault, and doesn't even really want to be there in many cases. 2 x Devourers always.
A flyrant with the skytyrant formation can't swoop, but has 20 to 60 ablative wounds to help it get places. It doesn't want to shoot, but rather wants to run up the field as fast as possible into combat. Go all out with the close combat options.
