Extra Credits Vlog just posted a video on the way Games Workshop has changed its way of handling their IP.

Interesting how looking back GW was the king of the mountain and as the boat started to sink they continued on the same path
Now they are lacking behind they are throwing everything against the wall to see what sticks.

It's a solid video, and really interesting to get a perspective from someone outside of wargaming who's still a nerd. The Extra Credits team is full of seriously smart folks, so if they say this strategy has a chance of working, I'll believe it. It still seems like a bad idea to me, though.

Agreed. It's a very interesting video on how GW handles it's IP in digital media.

Though, I would love to see something of this nature taking a look at GW and it's business and game practices as a whole.

Saw that video last night. Ace job on the non-biased view by the video makers!

More games the better, I say. Even the bad ones can have awesome little gems in them.

I guess it all depends on what you mean by "working". Will it mean eventually getting a good quality game out there for us to play, or will it mean making GW a bunch of cash regardless of the quality of the games?

Interesting, though most of it's pretty logical to anyone who has followed 40k over the years.

The shotgun style of giving licenses out piecemeal to everyone over the recent years, I don't see how that could be a vetting process to see who they want to invest more in. The companies they are giving out licences to have been shovelware companies more than anything, they aren't the sort of companies you trust with a larger license even if they do produce a lucky 1 off game.

And the approach also has a downside: If you give everyone a license you probably have a harder time getting companies to invest into doing great work (or even getting great teams to invest in a license) when a side effect is that they will be just associated with the shovelware. The DoW license probably worked well for both sides because they knew that they had a certain degree of exclusivity and no competition to tarnish their reputation.

The Total War game probably works because it feeds of both audiences (TW and WH) who are less on the casual side of consumerism. It doesn't work for every one of their licensed games like that.
