I picked up some Secret Weapon Miniatures "Objective Markers: 40mm Ironsides", since I have modern and fantasy games that could use them.

However, I'm sorta stumped at what sort of color scheme to use for the globe miniature, and what to color those cube things from the sack to make the miniature generic as both treasure and something worthless in the tavern food storage area. Any suggestions?

fwiw, You can get them at The War Store: http://www.thewarstore.com/SWMObjectiveMarkers.html

globe miniature, like an astrolabe of bronze, or make it "realistically" the 'world' (vague continents on blue background or some alien world etc), could do a marble type effect on it, with the bands holding it. Or just paint it pure glossy black like one of the seeing stones from Lord of the Ring (yes I'm referencing the movie version, sorry)

re: sack - could be black or iron metal ingots, doesn't have to be precious metal! admantium ore or some such depending on your campaign could be worth a good deal and could be 'coal' in a tavern setting. Or just stick with coal period.

Could also paint them like tiny wood boxes. Full for treasure (possibly) or empty for the tavern.

Globe: a head in a glass sphere.
Cubes: dice. Tiny, beautiful dice. You're welcome.
