Found a great material I thought might be useful to others wanting something for industrial grating - 'STOPP' anti-slip rug underlay from Ikea (http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80227877/). £2.50 (in UK) for 200cm x 60cm. I tried the 'granny grate' that had been recommended elsewhere but struggled to get it to stick - this is a very easy to cut rubberised material that seems to have stuck well on a test piece. I've not tried painting it yet but I'm assuming this should be easy enough.

Let us know how painting goes. 'Granny grating' is cheap and easily available, but the gluing/painting issues make it less than ideal. It's also relatively stiff, though, which is a boon when making terrain. How rigid is this anti-slip grid? If it's the usual floppy drawer-liner stuff, it might only serve as a textured overlay for a solid base, where others could stand on their own.

Personally, I've taken to using aluminum diamond mesh (i.e. 'sculptor's mesh'), as it takes well to cutting (sturdy scissors or a sharp knife will do the trick, but I happen to have aviation snips and Wiss shears, as well, so I don't risk nicking the finer blades), as well as glues and paints. If I want a square grid, instead, steel or nylon screen (for doors/windows) works well.
