I never played Talisman, but I know it's pretty much that with a 40k skin. Is it fun? My brother is big into board games and I'm wondering if this will help get him into the 40k universe.

I haven't played it but I don't think it's worth picking up. Talisman is one of the worst boardgames I've played. That games is basically choosing left or right and rolling dice.

The Tick: Everybody was a baby once, Arthur. Oh, sure, maybe not today, or even yesterday. But once. Babies, chum: tiny, dimpled, fleshy mirrors of our us-ness, that we parents hurl into the future, like leathery footballs of hope. And you've got to get a good spiral on that baby, or evil will make an interception.

I have played it quite a bit, own all the expansions too. I never played proper talisman but I played the steam version and from what I can tell, Relic is an order of magnitude more complex/involved. Especially with the add-ons.

In terms of looks, the miniature busts are pretty sweet for the most part, especially once coloured. The board looks nice too.
People complained there was no pvp like you have in talisman, but you can do that with the expansions, either between players or "npc"s.

The randomness is quite controllable actually, at least with expansions. Though the more control you gain, the more broken your character becomes.
The different classes are balanced quite well imho. In the sense that anybody can win the game really. Except maybe the villains. They have a tough time winning most of the scenarios. They can't really compete with the heroes. It's still possible to win though. And you get to run around shouting " BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!" and being a general nuisance lol.

I quite like it, but I think it gets old fast if you play it 1 v 1. We played it with 4 people and it was fun every time. That said, the games can drag on for hours sometimes and it's almost impossible to stop somebody from winning when they decide to take the leap and go for the winning condition. Most of the game is spent trying to get better and find more relics and people just keep going because of the usual loot rush when they could totally win the game with what they have.

Don't underestimate how long games of relic will take. Your looking at like 2 hours, easily. Especially the later turns can last quite long, when you start getting various triggers or multiple turns or want look through decks.
You could try to get a game in with tabletop simulator on steam if somebody is willing to explain the game. It's a pretty genuine experience.

Good to know, especially the time frame. Did you paint your busts or just spray them?

We painted them. Feel free to look up some examples on google, they look gorgeous if done right. Or well, some of them anyway, it's still a work in progress. I should probably also mention one more thing. It's all imperial forces as you might have guessed. The villains are xenos and chaos, but they're not equivalent to the imperials.
They have their own mechanics and are really just npcs.
And as for the time frame, 2 hours is rather optimistic for 4 people, but then again, if the game lasts longer than it should because people keep going for loot rather than trying to win...maybe that's a good thing? But yea, you need to plan a game of relic, you can't just have a quick game lol
