G'day...so, I've got 4 battlewagons sitting around waiting to be painted, and I'll be picking up a fifth one so I can run the blitz brigade formation if I want...anyway, I wasn't really sure how to paint them up...my army theme is kind of a chaotic mash with bits from all the clans and just generic random freeboota stuff - I'm aiming for a full proppa massive Waaagh!, not just a warband....so, rather than come up with some unified scheme for all of them, I decided I'd paint up each battlewagon in a different clan's style (or at least my own interpretation of it): badmoonz, evil sunz, dethskullz, goffs, and blood axes.

...having not really painted anything badmoonz style before, and feeling like trying something a bit different for a change, I decided to start with a badmoonz wagon
(because painting a big vehicle all in yellow sounds like a blast, right?! )

anyway, here's some pics...what d'ya think?...any improvements/suggestions?

Nicely done. Bright, great contrasts, detail is well done. I don't see a lot of contrast in the wheels/treads, but maybe that was on purpose, vehicles do tend to weather the same. Now, where are the horde of stowaway grots waving over-sized revolvers and cackling....

Keeping the hobby side alive!

That is quite impressive. Stunning job on the yellow consistency, checkers make it really pop as does the red.

If you want criticism the tracks and the spoke wheels look very boring compared to the rest of the model. Possibly paint them yellow with mud in them? I know it sounds over the top and not to match realism with orks or 40k but it would be the same color as the battle wagon chasis.

thanks guys, and yeah, I do agree with your points about the wheels/tracks...they were the one part I was a bit unsure of when I was done...I might've gone a little crazy with the typhus corrosion on them
- they definitely do look pretty drab compared to the rest of it...I'm not too sure what to change about it though honestly

@Spacewolverine - your idea of painting the wheels/tracks sounded insane to me for a good few minutes after reading it ...but...after thinking about it a little more...you could be on to something there ...now, I wouldn't believe for a second that any paint would last more than 5 minutes on the actual treads of an ork battlewagon (if that was even part of what you were suggesting?)...but, actually, some pretty thoroughly beaten-up yellow paint on just the track wheels, and the front wheel hubcaps, could actually work quite nicely - I might have to try it out, not right now though, it's 2am here, but I'll probably have some new pics up here tomorrow!

and @edwardmyst - haha, I may be able to arrange some grotz for the revised photoshoot, stay tuned

Not painting the treads, I meant just the wheels and spokes a yellow.

I'd do some rust - browns and oranges - on the metallic parts of the wheels, help them stand out a bit more. Other than that, fantastic work! I especially love the checks on all the various plates.

They are Bad Moons after all. I could see them having some shiny gold-plated rims on their ride!

righto, I've just woken up...time to go make a bucket of coffee, and start re-working those wheels ...if all goes to plan, and I don't just make a horrible mess of everything, I should have some new pics up in a few hours

haha...oh man, now I want to do a ridiculous trukk/battlewagon for my flash gitz, all "pimp my ride" style, with wheels looking something like this:

lepermessiah10 wrote:Awesome job! I've been struggling on painting my Yellow, could you share your recipe and technique on how you achieved it? Thank you!

thanks ...well, I need to start by saying my "basecoat" was a little unusual to start with...I'd bought this battlewagon second-hand, and it came with a kind of WIP badmoonz colour scheme already on it...it seemed to be white primer, then maybe averland sunset spray?...with some brown weathering powder and a few painted-on bullet-holes here and there, although the separate parts, the 'ardcase and the turret pieces, seemed much brighter yellow...maybe armypainter demonic yellow spray?....so, the basecoat was definitely a bit of a mixed bag. (disclaimer: definitely no "cheating" going on here though - there's not even the faintest speck of the previous paintjob showing, it's all been thoroughly painted over )

all I did though, and I might do it differently if I was to do it again, because it was a right pain ...was simply brush on about 6 thin coats of yriel yellow over the whole thing...just continued layering it on until I got a uniform coat really
...if I was starting from scratch though, like a normal person, I'd probably use white or grey primer, followed by either a coat of averland sunset and a couple coats of yriel yellow, or, skip the averland and just go for a couple of coats of yriel...that sounds much easier ...worth noting though, the final colour is a touch darker than just bare yriel yellow, as I gave the whole lot 2 coats of a wash mix using roughly 50% water, 25% nuln oil, 25% agrax earthshade...might've even been slightly more water in that mix, it was very subtle, hence the still very bright yellow after 2 coats - but it helped make it look just slightly dirty enough to blend in with all the weathering

allrighty!...got the wheels done, I think it's definitely an improvement! cheers for the idea Spacewolverine! ...I also touched up the wheels and tracks a bit with some weathered metal highlights.

some of my rebel grotz commandeered it for a quick joyride ...here's a couple of pics, what do you guys think of the re-done wheels/tracks?
