I have some fantasy characters that I want to base up. When I am playing with them I am may need to have them elevated to look like they are flying, and upon other occasions will need them to look like they are on the ground.

Consequently I was thinking about trying to do something with the base so that it would look OK in both circumstances (when they were flying I would be putting the miniature/base on top of a tower that I will be making to make it look like it was flying).

I was wondering whether anyone had any suggestions about how base up the miniature so that it would have this versatility (e.g., make a fire/smoke/fog/magic effect for the base)?

Yes, that is an example of something like what I was thinking about (however with the base actually being flames/smoke/magic or something).

It's not too hard, just mount the mini on a short rod the desired height above the base and put some green stuff around it. Pick and pull some green stuff with a wet sharp tool till it looks right. If you have ever sculpted fur or the like you will find it easy.

Wooshes of air or magic work quite similarly.
