What are the essential "bits" which are necessary for modeling a chaos sorcerer?

E.g.: Vanilla marine librarians need power armor (or other appropriate armor), a psychic hood and appropriate weapons.

Tactical marines require power armor and appropriate weapons.

What are the "essentials" to representing a chaos sorcerer?

Staff/sword/whatever (preferably chaos-y), power/terminator armor (again, chaos-y), spikes/horns/mutations/spell books/etc.

Basically, it can go from a "chaos" looking version of a Librarian, to a fantasy-ish guy. You've got a lot of scope, just not a psychic hood.

Personally I would like to build my own using the Double Dragon Head Backpack you used to see on the old Chaos Space Marine Sorcerers. However I balk at paying the price for the Thousand Son upgrade set which seems to be the only set/model you can get it with.

To get that 'double dragon' back pack effect, you can take a normal back pack, remove the circular vents and replace them with the gargoyle head weapon muzzles from the chaos vehicle sprue. Another alternative is replacing the vents with skulls or whatever you fancy really!

The basic chaos marine kit includes a bunch of backpack toppers that are a skull embedded in a chaos star. I think this makes a great topper to a chaos force staff.

Pick a cool helmet, maybe convert some custom horns to make it stand out. Having a cool helmet or head is an effective way to mark out characters.

Add scrolls, books, pouches etc. These are easily made from greenstuff/card/plastic and so on. If you don't want to make your own, the empire flagellant kit is a good source (also provides lots of conversion materials for cultists and so on). The more of these the higher the implied mastery level.

Try to find something that can represent a spell familiar.

If you want a robed look, there is a Dark Angel kit with robed marines (also provides lots of religious/magicy looking bits).

Pose is important. A sorcerer needs a commanding or casting pose. Think carefully about what you want your sorcerer to be doing, don't be afraid to chop up bits like arms to rotate the wrists and so on.

Try to model any other upgrades you plan to take; the more ostentatious the mini the more it will stand out from a mook marine. Think about how you want things like sigils of corruption to be represented.

Another thing to consider with psykers is to have their weapons holstered. This implies they don't need their weapons to fight (who'd use a weakling weapon when you have the unbridled power of the warp to fight with)!
