I noticed that the only real difference between a thief and a thug is that the thief has only a dagger and can move an extra inch. Is there anything else he can do that's special or is he even worth taking a few of?

Yep, that extra inch for the same cost as a thug. And if your opponent uses alot of spells that require a will save, a thug has negative will.
