I've been in this as long as you guys. I was crazy excited about the Chaos Space Marines codex that came out far later than I would have liked (I had a chaos army running out of the Codex Imperialis for a long time).
I found it most interesting to read the designer logs from (I believe) Andy Chambers.
GW's designers didn't know what to do with Chaos, and the Imperialis list had every sort of Daemon, Beastman and Cultist and stuff. The 2nd ed Codex was the first time they really focused on the Space Marines, and gave additional background (sometimes contradicting previous fluff) for every original traitor legion.
It was glorious.
And Abaddon wasn't short back then. Which I don't get- Ragnar Blackmane is older than him (actually end of Rogue Trader days) and his mini is still massive.

I don't remember anything particularly special about them. The black provided a convincing starting point for
OSL effects (as did the very dark metals that work so well on Abaddon).

The ice / bright powerword looks good and you didn't do the "Airbrush OSL over the top". Subtle and shocking.
Thanks. I find the airbrush
OSL doesn't look very much like the mini is actually being lit by the object. Really, because most of the time they end up lighting spots that would definitely be shadowed from the light source.
