I managed to get a sneak peek at the generals handbook and something weird stood out to me, not only was the Spirit of Durthu present but he also wasn't unique. You could include multiple of him if you so wanted and the warband campaign force builder (which no other warband is allowed special characters) has the option for either the Spirit of Durthu or a Treeman Ancient. So it seems he is no longer a special character and is just a generic melee treelord leader? Or perhaps it is a typo, or maybe fluffwise Durthu pulled a C'tan and fractured into multiple different spirits of himself?

Either way, seemed a little odd that he could be taken in multiples and in Warbands.

well, seeing as the Spirit of Durthu cannot be killed and just inhabits a new tree when the old one is destroyed it is possible he may able to inhabit and control multiple trees at the same time, that would be pretty cool, however I fear it may be just a typo. Although the upcoming sylvaneth releases this may shed some light on this.

Can confirm this now, basically what happened is durthu's spirit has somehow split and is now inhabiting multiple trees as sons of durthu, kinda like avatars of khaine, meaning that you can field multiple durthus. Pretty exciting stuff.

Also with the new models, is it tree spirits imitating previous mortal elves or is it elf spirits imitating trees?

Haven't followed the lore as closely.

Thanks.

I'm like 75% sure it's (dead of course) Elf spirits in trees.

If you can't believe in yourself, believe in me! Believe in the Dakka who believes in you!

This, they are strongly hinted at being the wood elves from the world that was

A Spirit of Durthu pops up in the recent Sylvaneth novel - they are certainly now a 'thing' in Age of Sigmar rather than a shoe-in from 8th. However, as to their particulars, we'll have to wait until Saturday and the arrival of the Sylvaneth Battletome!
