I've got some Chaos Marines and I want to paint them in the colours of the Word Bearers. Instead of the brighter Word Bearers I want the red to be dark, but not to the point which it obscures all details. I base-coat Khorne Red but I'm not sure what to do. Afterwards. I'm fine for painting metals and guns. My skill level is on the lower end of average so I don't want some Golden Daemon level advice. Any help at all would be great! Thanks in advance.

Ultra-Ultramarines are a great idea.

If you're sticking with GW paints you're going to need to mix Khorne Red with whatever they call black these days or do heavy Black or Brown washes on it to get it to go as dark as you might like.

If you're open to alternative paint brands Vallejo Model Colour Black Red, Army Painter Chaotic Red (which comes in both a spray and dropper bottle) or Reaper Master Series Spattered Crimson would be decent alternatives. Those are all very dark reds. If you wanted a more burgundy look, then P3 Sanguine Base is great. Forge World do an airbrush paint called Gal Vorbak red that's a bit similar, though I much prefer the P3 paint for coverage.
