Hello, dakkka dakka. I'm just getting started in warhammer 40k, and have a rather important question. I do not have a lot of money to spend on the, up front at least. So I went to craigslist, there I found a great deal on an eldar army, which was just what I was looking for. But my problem is that is is comprised of harlequins and eladar, so I'm not sure how that could work. I have heard of allies, but I'm not sure how that would work, and I expect I would need both codices. Also, if you would tell me weather the eldar army is worth it, thanks. The eldar army is assembled and painted, and he wants $130 for it. here's the list. Thanks in advance. - Josh

Firstly, welcome to Dakka and 40k in general!

Next, despite the name, this part of the forum is for rules questions rather than polls or other questions (confusing, I know) - don't panic though, you can get the topic moved by attracting a moderator using the little yellow triangle next to the post.

Lastly, in an attempt to actually answer the question - yes, you would need both Codexes, but fortunetly you can easily add the Harlequins to the Craftworld Eldar using the Cast of Players formation (one Troupe, one Shadowseer and one Deathjester).

Totalling up everything it would cost $518 brand new, and even knocking half of that off for second hand it still looks like a great deal. It's not the most competative list though - but perfectly fine for starter / beginner / casual games.

Thank you so much! I do have another question, if the cast of players formation is used as an ally, how are they deployed, or are they just deployed like normal?

Because Craftworld Eldar and Harlequins have an alliance level of "Battle Brothers" with each other, they are deployed as normal.

Less, "friendly" levels of alliance exist, such as the animosity between Tyranids and, well, nearly everything, which would limit deployments if you included Tyranids and Space Marines in the same army for example.

Awesome! I have been looking at eldar and 40k in general for a while now, and I have seen troops "transported" in vehicles. does that require a specific vehicle, or can I use a tank for example.

That is definitely a good deal! There is a lot of really excellent stuff in there. You would need both the Harlequin and Craftworld Eldar codexs to play the whole force, but the Harley force is so small you could easily get away with just starting with the Craftworld codex to start. Add some jet bikes and there is a very decent Craftworld army there.

Actually, a little of both - there are tanks (like the Fire Prism) that cannot carry anyone, vehicles like Wave Serpents (CWE) and Starweavers (Harlies) who's main purpose is transporting units, and then things like Falcons (which are tanks that also have a small amount of transport space).

I'd go for it. You could make a pretty decent list at 1000 points with that stuff, and probably a 1500 point one too. Some of the stuff is sub-optimal, but even the weaker units in the Eldar codex are still at least decent compared with other codexes, so it really shouldn't be an issue. I made up a quick list that you might want to try that I think will have pretty much all your bases covered at 1000 points.

HQ: Farseer with singing spear and Spirit Stone of Anath'lan

Elites: 6 fire dragons with Exarch

Troops: 10 guardians with Brightlance

10 guardians with Starcannon

Fast Attack: 5 warp spiders with exarch

Heavy Support: Fire Prism with Shuriken Cannon and Holo-fields

Falcon with Scatter Laser and Shuriken Cannon and Spirit Stones

2 war walkers with Brightlances

I'd put the fire dragons in the Falcon and keep the Farseer with one of the units of guardians. You'll want to outflank the war walkers for some sweet side armour shots. You have plenty of anti-armour from the fire dragons, war walkers and the Brightlance guardians and fire prism can help too. You also have good anti infantry with the guardians, falcon, and fire prism. The warp spiders are simply fantastic and can deal with basically anything.

40k Armies:
Alaitoc 9300 points
Chaos 15000 points
Speed Freeks 3850 points

WHFB Armies:
Lizardmen 1000 points

For that price if eldars are interesting for you go for it! You won't be winning tournaments with it but it's nice list for friendly games and eldar codex is good in that it doesn't have total crap units so you won't be shooting yourself to your foot completely.

And as explained harlies are easy to ally with so no problems there either
