I am considering what to do for an imperial knight's base and i was thinking of making it stand ontop of a ww1 style trench or maybe ontop of a pile of rubble from buildings and others.
would it be to much and draw away from the knight itself? should i go for something more basic like few rocks and snow material?

As a display piece then go bananas, if you're planning on competitive games then check the rulespacks and with your opponents as you can gain certain advantages (and disadvantages, although your opponent is less likely to complain about those).
If it's a bit of both then maybe make two bases.
There is a plethora of fantastic OTT bases for large models from those wrestling with dreadnoughts, crushing other knights, fliers with huge exhaust plumes or crushing landraiders, or smashing through city blocks.
Your call really.

The guys i play with tend to not have painted armies and have been playing much longer than i have so if i did get an advantage i dont think they would care, do the rulespacks change on were i play or is it something in the rulebook?

(i dont know what they are)

For models I play with, I tend to make bases that are nice, but not too distracting. Generally a little muted so as not to distract from the model itself. For show, yeah, go hogwild.

I think it's important to make a thematic and characterful base (rocks, skulls, pavement, etc) but not to have a base that's too cluttered and busy. It should enhance the overall presentation of the model, without overwhelming. That's why I tend to shy away from bright colors (lava or grassy field) and go for muted schemes (blasted landscape or ruined urban themes)

With it being a knight, there's very little you could do to distract from it.
I'd say as long as it looks well designed and coordinated, rather than random nits of things, go for it.

One more vote for the trench, as long as you plan to make it shallow. It may be obvious, but don't raise the guy off a normal table more than an inch, then it would become a distraction and might be a problem. So...you have some 3-d painting to do...and I really want to see it! Bases are part of the model to me.

Thanks for the support im still trying to plan how to do it in my head while im working on somthing else for my army, ill probably have the trench raised up for a cultest or tac marine to have his gun stick out of it and maybe have the knight sinking into mud a little as it weight would naturally cause that, i think ill try to use pocycle sticks as the floor of the trench cause i have seen pacts of them for sale at hobby shops.
