Subject: What would you prefer, WYSIWYG but unpainted, or fully painted with some proxies?

There is a special scenario battle occurring at my FLGS tonight . This special scenario makes me want to change up my models, I have the bitz but they are unpainted and therefore won't have time to paint them . So, just as a general preference, would you prefer facing an unpainted WYSIWYG army or a painted army with proxies ie all pistols are now plasma pistols?

If it's something like "literally every pistol is a plasma pistol instead of whatever pistol it looks like," then that's not too hard to remember. It's when you get into micro-managing the proxies, "This pistol is a plasma pistol, but *this style* of pistol is a hand flamer, and *this style* of chainsword is a heavy bolter" that it turns into a problem to me.
Also, no invisible corkboard obliterators.

If they are changes you want to make permanently to your models, then I would say make the changes and go WYSIWYG.
If its just for this scenario I wouldn't bother and just proxy. No need to ruin a good paint job.
As above though I find as a rule of thumb, all of X is Y usually is fine for proxy as no confusion. If some of X is Y where other X is Z that's when people start to get a bit annoyed at proxying.

I think I prefer playing against a fully painted army - but I admit that WYSIWYG is easier to keep track off, particularly if it's unpainted (makes it easier to see it at a glance when standing next to painted miniatures).
Will add that, 'blanket proxies' (ie whole units have Shootas not Sluggas, or IC Wargear) are fine for me, specific proxies within a unit (like changing half a unit to Meltaguns, a quarter to Bolters, etc) is really irritating.

I'm heavily biased on this, since I'm running this event
But I always prefer a good paint job to WYSIWYG. That said, if you're finding yourself in situations where you frequently have to say X is Y, and Y is always ending up the same, consider re-jiggering and repainting after tonight

Most of my Marines are unpainted, but I try and make sure the weapons are accurate or at least have a similarity.
WYSIWYG is tons easier.

For something as simple as what the OP is asking, I'd always prefer to play against the painted army.

I don't mind a single unpainted WYSIWYG model in an otherwise painted army.

I would prefer fully painted, but as long as you ran through any proxies beforehand I wouldn't really care.
Nothing worse than charging a unit of something shooty only to be told "oh yeah these all have storm Shields and force weapons".

Fully painted with some minor proxies.
It is so much more of an enjoyable experience to play with painted armies.

Painted and proxies no question, unless those proxies are 'these devastators are actually assault marines and this rhino is a whirlwind' level of proxies.

The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that. |

Painted over WYSIWYG. A non-painted army is just not fun to play against, while a little proxying has no effect on the game.
