Hi, this post is not a troll so please don't take it as one!

I quit 40k for Warmahordes a few years back due to all the issues that I'm sure are nothing new to people here - unbalance, perceived poor treatment by GW, price hikes, etc etc. Hopefully nothing new or offense taken there.

Anyway I still enjoy the fluff, particularly the Horus Heresy and have seen emails from GW about army builder apps and things like that, as well as people posting about the occasional 30k games.

So my question is: is 30k a thing ? Are there many people who play it ? Is there a modicum of balance ? Are there netlists ? 30k tournaments ?

I enjoy all aspects of the hobby, from the painting to relaxed play to highly competitive play. I'm just trying to figure out where 30k sits in that spectrum before I invest the time and money in building a World Eaters army legion. Realistically if the answer is "its primarily a beer and pretzels game" then its probably not for me.

Thanks!

1) 30k is, indeed, a thing
2) there is balance. HOWEVER there are still strong units and weak wargear (can't think of any weak units, just weak wargrear, to be fair)
3) as a whole, the 30k community seems to be more fluffy rather than WAAC
4) 30k tournaments happen, but not all to often
5) Problem with netlists is that in 30k, there is no massive power gap, and even 'strong' lists can be taken down by weak ones with good play.

I'll never be able to repay CA for making GW realize that The Old World was a cash cow, left to die in a field.

It's definitely a 'beer and pretzels' game. I've been to a couple of 30k tournaments, and the atmosphere is great. Loads of people just looking to have fun with their minis, win or lose. I'm sure there will be a few who play competitively

We are starting to get a few WAAC people drifting over from 40k since BaC hit shelves. These will be your Iron Hands players who spam FW heavies and quad mortors. Other then that the community and game itself is fantastic.

Recasts are like Fight Cub. No one talks about it, but more people do it then you realize.

Iron Hands players who play to the fluff are WAAC. You saw it here first folks.

Eh. I think there's the fluffy Iron hand version of this, and then the obviously only bringing the best things version of this. THOUGH the latter is pretty rare.

Quad mortars with shatter/phosphex are 1 of the few "broken" units in 30k if SPAMMED. Fluffy or not, more than 1 unit of 3 or 1 Scorpius is just being rude to your opponent.

I like the 30K for lack of formations and crap like the IH Chapter Master with Gorgon Chains and what not. I'm playing a 40K homebrew campaign right now, with some friends, and the levels of powergaming are off the charts. Meanwhile I read/watch a lot of 30K batreps - almost all of them present a cohesive, competitive, WAAC-less game.

OP, I guess it depends where you live. It's been gaining traction in Chicago as more material has been getting released for it and 40k keeps getting less and less playable. I'm lucky to have about tennish dudes in the city that I know of who play regularly and host small tournaments and events. There are more in the burbs, too. I'm very much looking forward to the big adepticon tournament that is happening in early 2017 also in my area.

As everyone else on this forum will point out, it's way more fun, streamlined and balanced than 40k has been in many years, so hopefully you live somewhere where you can find other players (or convert some!) and hopefully it rekindles your interest in the hobby, as it did mine! (I'd totally given up on 40k too!)

Yup, it's growing FAST.

It's kinda like 40k used to be, before Formations and Giant Robot Suits and Deathstars.

Take claims of 30K game balance with a grain of salt. There is somewhat more balance than 40K with intra-legion games because they draw from a common army list.

But there are certainly some legions with legion-specific rules that are OP when compared to other legions' rules.

while you have a point, the power gap between the best legion buffs and the worst legion buffs is NOTHING compared to the 40k power gap. (Although, I will say: Mechanicum is stupidly strong against basically anything )
