So I'm still looking at what I want to start with for dipping my toes into AoS. I was thinking of creating a more Elite army utilizing SEs, and having a heavy Ranged component using Judicators, Prosecutors with Javelins, and a Knight-Venator leading it. Of course, filling it out with some sort of frontline, maybe just Liberators but maybe some other Order units. Perhaps a Wizard of some sort is needed?

What have your experiences been with ranged SE stuff? Prosecutors don't seem that good statline-wise, but they're pretty cheap for the 3 of them and they have the mobility/range to harass things and pick off strong opponents, while still being fairly tough with 4+ rerolling 1s. The Venator seems so good. Solid statline, strong shooting, massive speed.

My current SE list doesn't use Prosecutors and has a decent ranged components.

Lord Celestant on Dracoth with Shield
Venator
Castellant

Judicators (2 units of 5 with Bows)
Liberators (2 units of 5)

Retributors (2 units of 5)
Concussors (2 units of 2)

The Judicators, Concussors and Celestant all handle ranged attacks pretty well and with the Castellant buff can tank for days. I suppose I could drop the Retributors for more ranged but their threat is crazy.

Look up if you can find a formation with a lot of Judicators, I'm sure there is one. Also I recall they are battleline, so you don't have to field anything else in point games.

That's a solid list! Pretty small unit count, which I sort of like, but is also pretty scary with many missions requiring 5 units to hold objectives. Maybe would drop one of the Heroes for more dudes.

There's a formation that's 3 Liberators and 2 Judicators, Liberators give cover and all things get to reroll wounds of 1. It's not bad.

How do Battalions work in Points? Do things in Battalions count towards limitations/requirements? Formations in 40k don't for a CAD, but AoS is different.

Check out the formation Skyborn slayers, The entire army can deep strike, and is immune to battle shock. Since you deep strike for deployment, crossbows become viable because their short range ins't as big of a deal. The rest of the battalion (the AoS term for formations) are solid melee units, and a commander to buff their to hit. I think it's the most balanced of the battalions and starts at a decent points value of 1260 including both troops and the cost of the battalion.

As for prosecutors, if you look statline only they aren't that impressive, but they are flyers with ranged weapons, so they are good assassins, and pretty much the most mobile unit you have. If you are not planning on deep striking, They will be the unit you use to capture things or contest things. They also compare pretty favorably to judicators, take two three man javelin units for the cost of a five man judicator unit, and you will get way more work out of the prosecutors. Plus they are really awesome to look at.

As for javelin vs. hammers, I lean javelin, hammers are like assault marines with jump packs, fast, mediocre shooting, decent in melee but generally don't bring enough wounds/attacks to take on dedicated melee units. Javelins are better at ranged, do extra wounds at 9 inches plus, and giving the prime the trident and they can get a lot of wounds down field with a -1 rend. They Kind of suck in melee though, which is fine because that's not where I want them.

Battlaions cost points on top of the units it takes to form them, like skyborn slayers is 140pts on top of the 1020 for the units involved. For that 140 you get deep strike and immunity to battleshock, which is probably worth it. The other thing battalions do is allow you a second piece of wargear, while the wargear is good, I don't think that aspect would push an iffy battalion into must have range, but it's a nice benefit.

Constantly being negative doesn't make you seem erudite, it just makes you look like a curmudgeon.

Where's that formation from? It looks pretty cool, though a bit big for 1000 (where we'll be starting in my group until people get armies up to par).

Yeah I really like Prosecutors with Javelins. Sick models and actually pretty solid rules, for a reasonable points cost (though $$ is something different).

I think it's one of the free ones in the app, failing that I'm not quite sure.
