The Warp

Hello dakka-ites. Recently I left the rain-lashed shores of the west Highlands in Scotland to travel around Queensland, Australia. After a great time scooting around for a few months I've settled in the one place for a while and decided to start up a new project with one of the few 40k armies I didn't collect back home - Necrons.

Back home I would mostly try and get to tournaments as I lived in a remote area and pick up games were hard to come by. Therefore, some of my armies were pretty cut throat (principally Tau) and intended for competitive play. Over here, I don't think I'll be too bothered about that, I'm more looking to quickly build up an army as a painting project using models that I like, and maybe some conversions in there Hopefully I may occasionally win a game with them at the local FLGS, but that's a secondary objective.

So far in my army colour scheme musings, I was thinking of going for a Game of Thrones 'White Walker'-esque look with the crons, which since I suppose the white walkers army is dead too is a reasonable analogue. Not sure whether I'll paint over the green tubes for the warriors as an ice blue, or get some blue clear tubes, or just leave them as they are.

Figured the 'Start Collecting' Necrons box was a logical start. I like the triarch stalker model and the overlord, whilst I'll probably need some necron warriors. However, was slightly taken by surprise by how expensive a lot of GW stuff is down here in Australia, so probably be procuring a lot of second hand models from now on.

As a bonus, the formation for the starter box is pretty darn great - the warriors and scarabs can effectively be infinitely reincarnted each time they are destroyed as long as they can be placed within 3" of the overlord from the same formation. That may come in useful!

So for this morning's build, I've got my overlord dude built as well as a couple of warriors that i've already started experimenting with paint schemes. Come to the realisation that the colours (and lack of a decent white basecoat) that I have - or more don't have - are pretty inadequate for what I want to achieve, so off to the FLGS I go this afternoon. If the missus doesn't beat me up first for spending more money on my so-called 'small, cheap project'

Also, just managed to aquire eight destroyers, two old school metal tomb spyders and some lords & crypteks on an on-line auction, so they'll be speeding their way through hyperspace towards my post box now. With that in mind, I'm pressing towards the following 1000 pts army, hopefully for a game in two weeks or so:

Retribution Phalanx (starter set formation)

Overlord, Resurrection Orb, Voidreaper
12 Warriors
Triarch Stalker
4 Scarab Bases
= (476) pts formation total

Destroyer Cult

3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
3 Destroyers
Destroyer Lord, warscythe
= (470) pts formation total
= [946] Army total

Actually, as I wrote that it seems I contradict myself in saying I wasn't bothered about a nasty army - that is reasonably mean in a 1k game. Anyway, its the models I'll have, so I'll get working on painting them up. Hopefully will have a couple of more completed models by tomorrow.

So I managed to get hold of Celestra Grey basecoat and went through the steps with nuln oil then drybrushing on praxeti white, though I can't say that it looks particularly good right now. Think it's gonna take some practice to get the effect I'm after!

Decided to get started on the big man, my overlord model. Or as I'll be painting onto the base rim, my dynasty's nemesor.

I think I've just about got a decent method for making the white and ice blue pop after a bit of trial and error, and that's by basecoating my white armour areas grey, then a light was of nuln oil then a light coat of white, plus having a couple of black parts on the model as a contrast. What I'll be doing with this guy is keeping his cloak and his scythe black with ice blue highlights, whilst the armour gets done white, with ice blue recesses - ribs, eyes etc. On the Warriors I've kept their shoulder pads and the guns black for contrast.

Interesting stuff, looking forward to seeing a finished model in the scheme you're proposing.

Thanks evildrcheese, so am I! Need to get cracking with it at a harder rate.

I went down to my FLGS to paint today for an hour or so and to get to meet some locals in the hobby. Got a minor bit of progress on the big man, but he's getting there

Still need to wash the gack out of the bronze parts, and do a bit of white highlighting on the blue as well as some blue/grey highlights on the black (as well as do the base) but getting closer.
I'm going to do the orb black again, then a dark blue with ice blue and white swirls through it, to make it almost palantir-esque (Saruman's facetime orb ala Lord of the Rings). I know I'm not the worlds best or fastest painter, but happy with an hour's progress on this dude. He'll be finished by monday hopefully.

Also, got more of a scheme with my warriors. This guy is test paint scheme guy so its already on him a bit thicker than I'd like:

So I plan on getting on with the overlord - think it should be finished this afternoon.

But I also received my next items to work on - two old beat up tomb spyders. I really like the new models for spyders, but the old ones go for cheap these days, and they are still pretty cool.

As you can see they are relatively stripped of paint, whilst the first one there has a small amount of paint on the 'face' and claws that I don't mind painting over. Has to be said though - the one with two claws is in a lot worse condition than the other, with two of it's legs appearing snapped rather than just become loose. The second one with the gun (particle caster/beamer??) appears to be in quite good condition.

Both models seem to be missing a third pincer on each claw, but thats a fairly minor detail and you can only notice by having a very close look to see a small indentation where it would be glued on.

Therefore, if I get my overlord finished today or tomorrow, I'll get cracking on with these big beasts, to add some metallic muscle to my small growing legion. They'll be a part of my force plan gaming wise too, as I would wish to include a canoptek harvest formation at some point (lets face it, what necron player doesn't want that formation?!). My plan for painting for the next month is as follows in priority:

Overlord
Tomb Spyders
Triarch Stalker
Destroyers (when they arrive, currently in hyperspace)
warriors + scarabs

A small update on progress.

Work plus tourist travelling stuff has been a welcome obstacle (well, perhaps not the work) of progressing on with the project. However, I have received my destroyers finally, and also got hold of some more warriors, though they are currently still on sprues. Also, managed to get some 1000 pts games in, wiping Iron Hands then Blood Angels armies, and a narrow loss to Dark Eldar. So things are looking up for my antipodean hobby experience.

I got my overlord as finished as he was going to get, and entered him into the local hobby store painting contest. He didn't win, but was happy just to have him on display for a few days in the FLGS store cabinets. Here's the pic they took of him, a bit out of focus but like that his chest and res orb are in the foreground:

Also got my scarabs pretty much done, may highlight the 'eye' lens, but they are tabletop at least:

This guy is still mega WIP, think its an old Pariah model? Anyway, you can see from the other one how they were painted previously, basically just washed with some rust colours. Getting him done up to my scheme, highlights required, especially on the weapon. As he's a bit different looking from a lord but with a warscythe, may use this crazy dude as Vargard O'Brian:

And if I have a Obyron, then I'll need a Zandrekh for him to guard, will I not? After I stop procrastinating and get the warriors all done, then this little chap may get done up to be my Zandrekh. He's certainly seen better days, but I love this old lord model:

So I still have a lot to get on with, but the white walker crons are slowly advancing along. Not as slowly as the Walkers seem to advance towards the wall in GoT, but whatever. Thanks for looking!

Nice progress all around. The Overlord looks great, really nice effect on the orb.

Cool scarabs, though I despise those things in game...So can't fully approve of you using them.

The Warp

Hi Dakka-ites. Been a while since I've been able to update this properly, been doing a lot of travelling all over the place which is great - though it gets in the way of important stuff, like painting Necrons!

So I said I wanted to build my force around a Destroyer cult. And here is a pic of some of them I got online:

The destroyer on the right is the colour scheme of the majority of my online purchased Destroyers, the one on the left is a WIP of building up to my white scheme - basecoated grey, washed with nuln oil, then drybrush the white on. In the background you can see one of the old school tomb spyders from my previous post has now been built.

Also, the destroyers obviously need flying bases. Whilst the previous owner had built rather impressive bases for his colour scheme (shown below), they were mostly broken in regards to slotting into the destoryers or missing magnets. I appreciate the effort they had went to in building these bases, however I didn't see how I could salvage them for my own use:

Therefore, I decided that I'd get hold of my own magnetised bases. A bit of a look around later, I found the excellent Back2Basix magnetised flying bases. These ones are great for destroyers and jetbikes, they also do larger ones for the likes of eldar/tau skimmer vehicles that are a bit stronger:

So with gathering my legions (arriving via post that is!) and equipping them with famed Necron anti-grav technology (flying bases ) it was time to press on with some building and painting:

The Destroyer workshop: left - almost finished; centre: original previous owner colour scheme; right; basecoated and washed:

I have also picked up a squad of Triarch Praetorians. I love these guys - to me, their background seems to carve a niche for them in Necron heirarchy somewhere between Judges and Inquisitors. So cool. Also, very effective when paired with my Destroyer lord with a 2+ rerollable save to tank for them. They kick a lot of behind on the tabletop. Currently, not too sure where i'm going with the colour scheme for them, but I want an icy head compared to the white heads for my troops and the black heads for my destroyers:

A built and near finished mummy tomb spyder, with her growing brood of scarab bases. I've ran out of that size of bases, but have enough scarab models to build 2 more bases if need be. I actually really like scarabs as a great counter attack unit that everyone underestimates. The spyder is rather good at dying very quickly though, need to think of better tactics for it:

my WIP Nemesor Zandrekh proxy. I was missing a green rod to complete his staff, but addition of a not-needed lychguard warscythe head makes an irregular but passable weapon. Just waiting to be drybrushed white and highlights:

This old cryptek model was rather beat up and missing both a staff and an arm. So I've converted him up to be my Necron stand-in for a Culexus assassin to deal with pesky psychic deathstars that marine players seem to love these days. This guy will be the opposite of the majority of my force - painted black with ice blue highlights:

Here's a bit of a display of what i have ready just now:

Thanks for looking. I currently have messed up my drybrush and basecoat brush, so require new ones. I'm not much of a skilled painter, so I keep managing to wreck my brushes. I just try and keep it neat, thats the best I can do currently!

Despite a couple of setbacks, it seems like after a crazy bit of planning by my better half I may actually be moving to New Zealand next month. In celebration of this, I've decided to try and get my legions ready for battle, and challenging myself to paint a tournament ready army for my Ovrenokh crons by the end of November.

Thought I'd start with two units that are almost always in any force i decide to field - my Destroyer Lord, and a squad of Immortals. Both would feature in either my CAD or Decurion based armies the vast majority of the time, so makes sense to get them table ready.

Today's challenge - get the D-lord finished, and the Immortals painted, if not based !! Start work at 5pm tonight, so better get on with it

As you can see, I've made a start on the big guy, but not much of a start really:

And here he is in a 'tanking wounds' position in front of some immortal chumps:

Hopefully I'll get them all done by tonight!

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Ok so I remembered I have some stuff to do before work, therefore I've failed my own painting challenge of getting all the immortals done.

However, the DLord is pretty much finished. No doubt I'll decide to highlight and wash some more stuff on him, since he's my go-to HQ (lets face it, he's a pocket Monstrous Creature HQ that can join squads!) but I'm happy he's a decent tabletop standard. For me anyways:

If you have a look at my WIP shot from earlier, I was going to have his head white and the shoulders black -decided to do the opposite, and have all my destroyers including their boss with black heads instead. Looks more menacing :

Testing out an Immortals colour scheme. Not sure I'm entirely happy with it yet, don't think the regal blue works on the shoulders even with the edge highlighted. But hopefully I'll thrash it out tomorrow some more.

Once the immortals are done I'm dreading painting the triarch stalker...

Excellent color scheme. Have you ever considered using some washes on top of your paint? Really easy to do and adds a lot of depth with just a single step.

Thanks for looking!

Yeah I'd like to wash it with.. something. With the overlord I washed over the white with Nuln oil and wasn't too sure it was the right idea, and drybrushed a lot of it white again. Basically I'm just concerned about washing over white - having never done a white army before just anxious really

In further development of my collection and force, these terrifying tag team were delivered today. I've been keen to get hold of this pair since I started collecting Necrons. Actually, this is my second Deciever model I've owned, as I previously converted one up to be my Avatar of Khaine for my Eldar back in Scotland. Got a great deal on these two online, though it does look like the deciever's face is slightly distored in the finecast mould. I totally love the Nightbringer, looking forward to getting him finished.

Not sure they are very competitive, but I want to get them on the tabletop and ready ASAP!

You don't necessarily need to wash the whole model, just target the recesses and folders/hard edges, this will give a bit of depth.

Looking good so far though.

So managed to get my first full squad finished! (That isn't a squad of scarabs that is). Could do with a bit more highlighting around the shoulders but feel they look a decent tabletop standard just now.

Two squads of destroyers tomorrow I think.

Thanks for the support EDC. Got plenty of time to kill over the next couple of weeks so hopefully I'll crack through a few more squads.

On that note, got into the Sydney GW last few days and today I started trying to batch paint quite a few of my warriors as they are bothering me with their heretical upaintedness.

However, obviously not bothering me enough to keep me away from playing a couple of games when asked by friendly locals.

The Ovrenokh set up to get turkey-shot by advancing longways into Tau firepower:

Then spy on the unlogical hordes of Chaos from entrenched positions:

Getting through the warriors is such a slog. I admit, they are boring models to paint and I'd rather be working on others in my collection, hence why I've painted the immortals, some destroyers, tonnes of lords, scarabs and spyders so far. But I almost always use one unit of 10 in my Retribution Phalanx, so it will be worth getting them done. Then onto the Stalker and Destroyers, still don't know what I'm doing with the scheme for my favourite unit, the Triarch Praetorians.

So participating in my local club's escalation campaign, it's got a lot of noobs in it so decided to go with my never ever unit, and bought myself some lychguard. Fail, you say. But wait, there's more! Decided to kit them out with warscythes rather than sword and shield, so they shall die before ever doing anything at all more than likely. Well, we'll see. The campaign starts with 750 games for a month. I've squeezed in a very limited decurion, with reclamation legion and a squad of deathmarks with the lychguard with a Veil of Darkness rezorb overlord, so perhaps they'll survive turn 1 then chase stuff around and never catch it. But I like the models

hopefully get these finished tomorrow when I get down to the beach to pick up some more basing materiel. Looking forward to having a near fully painted force soon.
