I was looking to expand to a second Traitor Legion at some point and figured I'd start small with an allied detachment to my Word Bearers. I'd like to do a Legion that changes color scheme after the Heresy so I'm looking at Emperor's Children, Death Guard, World Eaters, Sons of Horus or Thousand sons.

I'd pretty much throw out the idea of Thousand Sons as I don't want to paint an allied army a different shade of red. And their rules aren't out yet. Death Guard aren't historically very friendly with Word Bearers so that's out. World Eaters aren't either, but they did a huge campaign together in Ultramar so it could be fluffy, but hard in game terms as they can't score.

I was surprised to see Emperor's Children as fellow warriors as I never thought the two Legions were all that close. Painting the III Legion would be fun and I already have a thought of a fast jump pack assault force to start off with. Definite potential there. Sons of Horus would be a solid fit as they are sworn brothers and would work well together. Fast assault forces and jump packs are fluffy for them too.

So I think it comes down to World Eaters, Emperor's Children or Sons of Horus. I run my Word Bearers on the chaotic side so Gal Vorbak and Mhara Gal are usually featured with dark channeling. Which Legion would compliment the Word Bearers? Either the ones I have listed or another one?

Sons of Horus are your only Legion Sworn Brothers, so they are the obvious pick.

True. But you can use that you your advantage...or at least, not to your disadvantage.

Red Butchers are a devastating assault unit - but have the annoying downside that they're never scoring. If you're not using a Rite of War for your main force, a Delegatus will let you take two squads of them as allied troops, giving you an iconic uncontrollable bezerker force for your more tactically sensible if less clinically insane word bearers to follow up behind.

You have Gal Vorbak for that. While they do not hit as hard, their resilience is comparable (except against Ap3) and they are faster, cheaper, can DS and they do not require a Delegatus tax to be taken.

Sons of Horus sounds fun do fluffy and supported by the allies matrix.

You could ally with Daemons, instead, but I'm sure you've thought of that option already.

Oh, I've got Daemons to ally in for the full Chaos Marine feel, but I'm looking for an allied Legion to try a different paint scheme and eventually branch out with as a stand alone army.

The Red Butcher idea isn't bad bit as pointed out the Gal Vorbak fill a pretty similar roll. World Eaters, Emperors Children and Sons of Horus all seem pretty melee centric with different styles.

World Eaters lose points for not being able to hold objectives, but that in itself is kind of fluffy. White is a pain to paint too.

Emperors Children have a cool paint scheme and have some pretty Chaosy things with the Kakophoni and sonic upgrades. Would fit well with my Word Bearers.

Sons of Horus are Sworn Brothers so that fits well and fit well with what I have too.

I think it's down to Emperors Children and Sons of Horus.
