Subject: Pricing of Necron Destroyers.

Numberless Necron Warrior
|
Hi there,
I know trying to comprehend GW's pricing structure is only a good idea if you want to end up pulling your own hair out, but I'm a glutton for punishment so I'm going to try jotting my thoughts about it here without going crazy.
So in AUD, a Necron Destroyer Squadron costs $90. It contains three thirteen-piece models, each one identical.
Now take a comparable set of Tomb Blades; again you get three models, however this time they're 54 pieces per, and come with three weapon options for each.
Go a bit higher and for $79 you get three Wraiths, 45 pieces, each with a unique pose, and a variety of weapons and heads to choose from.
Go even higher and for $83 you can get an entire Doomsday Ark, and you still haven't reached the price of three destroyers.
So I ask you, what is so special about these little bastards that makes three of them worth more than even a set of five immortals, which gives you two weapon choices or the option to go with Deathmarks, let alone a (relatively) huge model with four times the parts?
This wouldn't be that big a deal if they were just some obscure unit you wouldnt expect to see many of in an army, but they make up literally the spammiest formation in the entire codex! You're looking at four boxes of them just to complete it (with the heavies, because why wouldn't you?).
The only way I can figure their reasoning here is that the individually sold Necron Destroyer is $35. I guess that's because it's a more complex kit than any of the other standalone Necron models so it has to be more expensive. Then by extension, the pack of three has to be about three times that price.
So I know this is falling on deaf ears, but here's a thought: Stop selling the Destroyer as a single model, and price the Squadron at the same level as a box of Immortals. Or at the bare minimum price it around the same as a set of Tomb Blades.
Anyway, thanks for listening.

Because feth you thats why!
They released new rules that makes a nice formation called the destroyer cult. A formation that you'd want to field 12+ a lord destroyers in because it wrecks everyone and is insanely powerful.
They know you want it, so you'll pay, to up the number of destroyers you own...
That or their products team has no idea what they're doing.
I tend to be on the side of malicious corporate sales practices when it comes to this sort of thing.

You could also mail GW. Or try to start a boycot with all necron players. Reminding us that the pries are high doesn't really do that much.

GW Pricing Scheme Special Rule:
Roll a W3, thats the number of digits. Roll a W6 for each digit to determine the value. Concatenate the value to get the price. You may reroll a single W6 but only if you pass a morale test and you are withing 12" of the financial manager at the start of the new fiscal year and only once per game and only when it rains and pigs fly backward while screaming BLOOD FOR THE BLOODGOD...

Or you can just keep buying chaos everything, and not play them. Just sit alone in your room for years, painting and detailing, and detailing some more. Then keep doing that for years until you own upwards of 10000 points of chaos. Keep shining their swords and sharpening their knives. Then some day, some wonderful day, when a new book comes out that will realize your armies' potential, come out from hiding. Everyone will have thought you had left warhammer 40k for good, but no, you had been training, preparing, and brooding for this moment. Return with such vengeance and hatred that you will not hold back, and you will destroy everything in your path. Like a true chaos crusade, wait for the right moment, then burst forth from the Eye of Terror and unleash your pain on the whole universe. And when they cry and complain that you are OP and that it's not fair. Reassure them that it's true. It isn't fair, but it's what they DESERVE. All of them, each and every one of them deserve to be obliterated into oblivion. And if they ask you to play with a fluffy army, tell them you will do so. But on game day bring the meanest nastiest, ugliest army you can. Give them no opportunity for victory, give them no opportunity for enjoyment. Your only goal is to inflict as much pain and suffering as possible. And when they cry, and they will cry, laugh at them, drink their salty tears, and bath in their sweet, sweet blood.

The sad part is the Destroyers are actually cheap considering what class of models they're in (big-ass 3 model plastic things smaller than a dread but bigger than everything else and isn't a bike)
Their comparables in other armies are:
Tyranid Warriors/Zoanthropes/Hive Guards
Tau Crisis Battle Suits
Space Marine Centurions
Eldar Support Weapon Battery
Killa Kanz
Kataphron Servitors
With the exception of the Kanz, everything else is more expensive than them. However the Destroyers are really ,really old models (they, Warriors and Monoliths date back to the 3rd edition codex).

Tyranid Warriors used to be cheap, they were like a $25/30 box for 3.
Then they added a couple bits for the HQ Warrioe and doubled the price

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts. |

As far as GW are concerned we should be thanking them, why do you think there's such a rich conversion community with GW lines, we are no more creative than guys who play other war games, we NEED to convert models into other models and make the most of the kits we buy to try and make an army that costs less than the GDP of a small island nation.

you wanna take this argument to the extreme have a look at the cost of a single mek gun kit.
Cost in this business is not driven by quantity of plastic or number of models in the box / set / clampack. It is instead driven by a straight prediction of profit/loss forecast per sku (stock keeping unit). Imagine that the necron destroyers sku costs GW £100,000 ( I made this figure up for argument sake) to make in accumulated design, sculpting, tooling, manufacture, packaging and distrbution. When they make the product they forecast how many of that unit they need to sell in order to break even on the accumulated cost in the supposed lifecycle of that release. They then cost the package to the appropriate level that will get them a break even and hope that it sells enough to breakeven and make a profit.
They know that they'll sell a lot of necron warrior boxes compared to mek gunz so they price accordingly. You simply cannot justify the cost of a release based on its points level in game.
I think the Mek gun kit is the highest cost per point level model they'vve released.

That all makes sense to me, Nurgles86. I'm not really trying to argue anything so I hope I'm not being too overbearingly whingy here , but with all that in mind the Destroyer price still seems ridiculous. The design is as old as third edition so they must have paid for themselves in that regard by now, and as mentioned above they're part of an amazing formation that requires a dozen of them so I can only imagine they'd fly off the shelves if their pricing was a bit lower.
I think I might just simply end by saying it boggles my mind and leave it at that

I would attribute it perhaps to the kit's desirability - it could be possible that GW don't rebuild casts for them that often because they are less desirable than other models in the Necron range.
We'll never really know for sure; GW's pricing system for the most part is a mess anyway. As mentioned before, Mek Gunz are very expensive for what they are, and nobody really knows why that is. Unless you work at GW within a department linked to the sculpting of the casts or the injection process, I don't think you can work it out.
