I'd build it at least a foot wider than the game area you want to play, to give players extra space to put stuff, roll dice, etc.

So if you wanted a 6'X4' playing area, I'd build the table at least 6'X 5'.

YouTube's got a ton of videos on how to build a table in general...I'm not knowledgeable enough about woodworking to recommend one in particular.

Your housing situation, available space, budget etc. will all have an impact on how you should go about setting up a gaming surface.

Can you give us a little info? They range from plastic folding tables with gaming mats...to full wood built tables with modular board sections etc.

I built myself a folding 6'x4' (two 3'x'4 sections) with legs which screw into it. Used heavy duty glue ("No More Nails", though I head Gorrila Glue is similar and more well known) rather than nails or screws to get the parts the legs screw into to be part of the table. It's a bit wobbly, but was reasonably cheap.

I'm moving house soon, and will be looking into a much more robust alternative, probably on wheels.

I made this puppy. It's two 3x4 areas that are separate. They are held together lengthwise by Countertop clamps, and the legs are bolted on with standard grade 2 bolts. All 5 legs and 2 top pieces come apart for transporting. I gave it a 1.5" lip so I can create modular battlefield boards using up to 1" polyisocyanurate (pink or blue board), and MDF.

I would recommend building an 8x4 if you have the space. This way you not only can have a foot on either side of a standard game for reserves, books, dice, etc., but you can also easily divide the table in half for smaller games.

Having built my own folding, portable wooden gaming tables... my advice would be to buy as many of those 6x2 folding tables from the store as you need.

It was a fun project, but when it comes down to it, total cost of materials (one 6x4 table, plus 2 6x2 extensions) plus the number of times I've said, 'golly, having one of those plastic folding tables sure would be handy right now' (because I really don't want to use my gaming table for picnics, or set it up as the kid's table for thanksgiving) leads me to wish I'd gone with the more practical solution.

I build a gaming table out of MDF. It's heavy as all heck.

But it is
a) foldable
b) collapsable table legs
c) removable castors on one side and handle on the other so easy moving around (relative to weight)
d) a heck of a time to setup and take down because of sheer size and weight of the MDF. It's awkward and needs two people to get it done smoothly

Wow, really nice. Great job!

I use a ping-pong table. It was a pain in the arse to put together, but it was cheap, allows for two games at once, or one mega game, and it folds for storage and transport, and has wheels for a little mobility.

A couple of friends and I put this together out of recycled angle iron, mesauring 6'x4' and 3' height.

The top and bottom hold plywood insets and the top is ready for inset terrain tiles. The edges are nice for holding in dice and minis. Also works well for large board games.

This is a kind of crappy picture of one of the gaming tables I built in my cellar. While there is enough space to move around it while gaming, there wasn't enough space to stand back and take a decent picture.

The top gaming surface is 4ft x 8ft. The tabletop underneath it is 5ft x 8ft. The storage shelf on the bottom is 4ft x 8ft.

Plenty of room for miniatures, books, dice, drinks, templates, etc... on the tabletop, while leaving the gaming surface entirely for gaming.
