Hello all!

A friend of mine has opened a kickstarter for his plexiglass carrying cases. They are designed with modular trays that hold models in by their bases. The cases can be placed on their sides, upside down, or right-side up without impacting the miniatures inside. The front panel of the case slides out to allow access within, and each tray is removable (which makes sliding the models out of the trays much easier). There is a dice tray in the bottom of the case (also removable) with room to carry tape measures, tokens, whatever extras you need.

The trays have been made to work primarily with round lipped bases, the types used in Warmachine/Hordes and Malifaux. Trays have also been designed to hold Infinity miniatures, and plans are to make trays to hold 40k and AoS as well.

The goal of the cases is to be easy to carry and relatively unobtrusive during gameplay; the creator is an active tournament player, and found that conventional foam cases and trays were not as efficient when moving armies from table to table. You can place the case at the edge of your play area and place models back into it as they die without taking up a ton of game space.

The handles are removable and allow you to stack the cases if you wish to display the models at home (or where ever really ).

If you have any questions, feel free to ask and I will answer as best I can, or ask the creator about it and get back to you.

82,000 is a very large goal amount for a first KS.

Currently all of the cases he has produced have been hand machined, but a large part of this Kickstarter is to raise the funds for a CNC/Lasercutter so he can mass produce cases and trays easier.

I like the idea but there should be some kind of spring tension on the base grips as not all base heigts are the same and i am not fan of the see through plastic, not because everyone can see the miniatures but because the polystyrine is brittle or will it be Poly carbonate or polypropylene?

Interesting point on the base grips. Are you referring to the plastic of the bases being different heights, or the height of the base with flocking/rocks/other fancy stuff added? So far there haven't been problems with the plastic height, but he was making some changes to accomodate "taller" basing materials.

As for the plastic, it is plexiglass. I'm not well versed on different types of plexiglass, so I will ask the creator about it.
When I first asked him about the cases, he did say that they would be less durable than Battlefoam or Sabol. Bascially these are meant to be nice to look at and easier to move your army from table to table (and venue to venue), but if you want an indestructable case, you'll probably be looking at something foam.

This is a concept I explored 15 years ago and abandoned because it scratches the paint off the bevel.

PMMA is Plexiglas and that is the brittle stuff, exactly what lord_blackfang is referring to, i guess a strip of soft silicone rubber would keep the base in place and will not damage (much) the basing.

Fair points. I'm not sure what other materials he's looked into, but I'll ask him about the polycarbonate and polypropylene.

I'd worry that a silicon or rubber strip would make it really hard to get the bases in and out, and that it would actually increase the chance of paint rubbing off.

This is a really cool idea! After seeing others' posts though, I have the same concern regarding paint on the base and basing stuff. Please let us know what your friend comes up with!

Glad that you are interested!

I've forwarded the above concerns to the creator. He said that he's going to look into the different plastics. As for the bases, I might see if I can borrow a tray from him and test the bases for chipping myself.

Wow, that's pretty sweet where he tilts the case at 3:20 in the KS video. Campaign needs more planning and presentation... but man that was cool!

How does it deal with heat? Does the case become an easy bake oven?

This... He was away at a convention this weekend, but once he's back I really want to talk to him about sprucing up the page. Y'know, have some info to acutally grab people.

The ability of the case to tip around and not dump minis all over the place is pretty awesome though.

Now that's a good question. Where we live the temperature can get up to 35-40°C (95-104°F?), but I don't think he's left the case sitting in the car/outside with minis in it for an extended period. I'll see if I can get him to do a test on that. Any particular minis or plastics you are worried about?

anything resin would be the big issue. (To a lesser extend metal, because the materiel expands and then when it contracts the paint chips) Resin is the big one tho, because it is the most heat sensitive.

Person I think this will work better with PP style bases, or people who play warhammer on clear bases like my iron warriors. On standard GW bases with flock/sand you are going to destroy the bases.

Got a chance to talk to the creator and can finally answer some questions!

Presentation:
So, as most of you have noticed, the initial presentation of the KS was… unsatisfactory (read: ATROCIOUS ). The creator, Cory, is well aware of that and taking all the steps he can to amend this. This is their first time using the creator side of Kickstarter and when setting up the page, got a bit over-zealous with clicking and accidentally launched the Kickstarter before they had the page nicely set up. He was away at a convention this past weekend and didn’t have time to fix up the page before then. The page will start looking much better in the next couple of days.

So far they have filmed an actual intro video (now on he KS page!), are working on a video that will show setup and takedown while playing a game, and are fixing up the text to better explain the pledge levels. As some of you may have noticed, there is a link to his website on the KS, but the site is not yet set up (). I asked him about this, and he’s waiting on the 40k trays to be finalized so he can launch the full site and have it look all professional and fancy (my words, not his ).

Also, he’s got a Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/www.modulararmytransport.ca/) which is where the majority of updates and information will be available. Apologies for those of you that don’t use Facebook…

Purpose/Goals:
I kind of mentioned this before, but the goal of this KS is for Cory to raise funds to get equipment that will streamline/automate the building process a bit more, which will allow him to sell the cases at a more competitive price point, and allow him to offer extra products and customization at an earlier date. He will be offering the cases through his website and Facebook page regardless of whether or not the KS funds.

Basing:
In the past couple months that the cases have been in use, Cory has noticed no major chipping or damage to the paint on his bases. He figures that there will be higher rate of damage to the bases, however the tradeoff is there will be much less (or zero) damage to the models themselves. Foam trays do a wonderful job of protecting models as well, but I’ve personally found that models can still chip or get caught in the foam and break.
The 40k trays are still being finalized, but are being designed to grip the edges of the base, not the top of them. That will mean that the flocking and other materials on the top of the base will remain unharmed. Again, higher rate of scratching on the edges of the base, but the minis and basing material will remain perfectly preserved.

Materials:
Cory is looking into the other materials and getting some quotes on pricing and availability. He’s open to selling cases that use the more durable plastics, but will have to adjust the price of those ones accordingly. Ideally, he’s looking to offer multiple materials and layouts, so you can get what suits your desires and budget.

Easy-bake!
As per Moopy’s request, I asked about the easy-bake qualities of the cases. So the only “test” he’s done so far is leaving the case and models in the back of his hatchback, with a blanket over it, in 27ºC (80.6ºF) weather with the windows slightly open. The minis were fine in that. Other than that, the cases have no fancy heat dissipating tech, so if you’re going to leave your case and minis in the car most of the day in really hot weather, well, they’re probably not going to like it. At the same time, leaving any minis case in the direct sunlight is probably not a great idea.

Some random things that are being planned down the road (and will come quicker if the KS is successful):
Backpacks for the cases – offers better travel protection and ease of carry.
Custom case and tray colours, and custom engraving.
Different plastics for custom durability.
...
(Pretty sure there was more, but my memory is failing right now )

I think that covered most of the questions so far. Again, if there is anything else, feel free to ask!
