Hey guys,
I have been looking at some of the "new" ships that will be in Rogue One, and as an Imperial player I am already to throw my wallet at FFG to buy TIE Strikers. The only issue I see is that I don't know what it will do that isn't already being done by the TIE Interceptor. as the Striker is reported to have the same amount of cannons as it, and be faster than a standard TIE Fighter. The TIE f/o is already an improved TIE Fighter with it's points cost adjusted to match, the TIE Advanced Prototype already gives us a very cheap, nimble, ordnance carrying starfighter with a great dial. The Defender (with title) gives us some bricks that can backflip well and solid stats.
So, what can the Striker do for us that isn't already being done? And how do you guys think they should go about it if it is released for X-Wing? Hah, same with the U-wing, I only dabble in Rebels occasionally when I borrow some of my buddies stuff so I don't really know what they are lacking in their ship options and what the U-Wing can do for them.

They've been previously talked about by Lucasfilm and there are physical models of them on display at Celebration right now.

I thought the French leak (no pun intended) mentionned that the TIE Striker was an atmospheric craft, and not necessarily a spaceworthy one?

True, but it doesn't stop it from being a space fighter. From what I read, it is just better suited to atmospheric operations. Because them big panels on a standard TIE Fighter don't look like they take well to gravity haha. Automatically Appended Next Post: And here, take a look at the U-Wing.

I understand that it actually bridges the gap between the Jedi Starfighter of Ep III and the Civil War TIE, visually, but if it does fight in space and atmo equally well... what's the point of the TIE ln? It's a bit of useless retcon, from that point of view.
It looks great, don't get me wrong. But it makes the TIE ln look like an unnecessary design step between the Striker and the Interceptor. Again, it might be failure of imagination on my part, and I want nothing more but to be enlightened.

It might not be due to the Striker being 'bad', remember for a very long time the Empire's military doctrine was Quantity over Quality, hence cheap and easy to fly TIE/LN made up most of the fighter presence, maybe the Striker got phased out for being too pricey to make, or too tricky to fly, etc, plus once the Death Star was underway the requirement for a decent starfighter was sidelined. only after the Battle of Yavin and heavy TIE loss' against the T65 in various engagements did the Imperial Navy reconsider the Quantity over Quality idea which lead to the Interceptor and Defenders (sadly too little too late)

Well, Interceptor only, unless you're the kind of person that cites Legends-type fanfiction as the real deal
Your poi ts might be valid, but all I see is less hull to manufacture, better vision for your pilots. And again, it might be even stupidesr than that, à la "my congressional district depends on those battle tank-makin jobs" kind of stupidity.
Maybe I'm expecting too much from an iron-fisted autocracy?

That's also not beyond the realm of consideration, it's all too easy to imagine inept squabbles and self-interest being rife amongst the 'middle-management' of the Empire leading to sub-par military gear (for an example Google SA80 rifle)

Hah, that is a pretty good example Turnip Jedi. I really wouldn't put it past any of the leadership of the Empire to use a cheaper example not only because that contract is lining their pockets, but as a show of force as well. It always looks more impressive having more ships.

Without knowing more, we can't really guess at it. In game terms, as you say, finding a design 'space' is getting increasingly hard; Imperial Veterans leaves 'heavy ordnance carrier' sewn up by the TIE bomber, 'light tactical fighter' sewn up by the TIE advanced prototype, and ace craft sewn up by the TIE advanced and TIE interceptor.
maybe an actual medium fighter? The TIE advanced generics never really see much use, and the Interceptor generics even less. TIE defender generics are nice, but expensive - maybe a twenty-to-twenty-five point fighter that doesn't rely on unique pilots to work would be nice.
As to how to make it unique? Dunno. I don't see that it can be massively tougher than an interceptor (I guess it could have some shields - depends on what the writers decide to give it!). 4 Guns probably means 3 attack dice, which is actually quite distinctive amongst the sub-defender Imperial fighters (only the Interceptor matches it).
Giving it something unique would be nice - something like SLAM would allow you to trade shooting for repositioning, allowing it to be the 'fastest' imperial fighter but not without cost. Equally, a modification or title which pairs with SLAM (something like Corran Horn's ability - trade shooting next turn to improve your shot this turn) makes for a nice hit-and-fade fighter.
Yes, the Empire already has one of those in the form of the TIE phantom, but they really need Advanced Cloaking Devices and High Pilot Skill to work properly, which tends to limit you to one or at best two in a squad. If the TIE striker could do Rapid Fire/SLAM/Recharge tricks and still have four ships in a squad, it could be quite tasty.

From the pictures, the U-wing looks like a pretty heavy duty ship - I'm thinking a total of 7-8 damage to kill and the Striker looks as flimsy as any other TIE, so 2-3 hull, if is has shields, I'm wondering if they'll make a bit more durable (as imperials already have a ton of flimsy ships) and give it 3-4 shields? In terms of the rolls they fill, the U-wing looks like it would carry ordinance. Maybe a bomber-fighter hybrid? The Tie striker looks like if should be incredibly manueverable - I'm thinking 4 or 5 maneuvers that include K-turns and segnor loops with the traditional 2 damage dice.

TIE/d is canon again broski, they have it in one of the Mobile games (which they deem canon) along with StormCommandos and Phase II Darktroopers

U-Wing could be a large-based ship, as it is a personnel carrier/dropship. TIE Striker I think is going to have a hard time finding a niche, maybe it'll be hull 4, have the speed and firepower of the interceptor, but the maneuverability of... errr... a B-wing or something.

Can't wait for the weather to get nippy then. Loved the second half of season 2, they are rushing into Rogue One/New Hope territory.
Is the show supposed to be a self-contained story?

Its mostly its own story, but they try to tie into things occasionally. Like showing Lando, Leia and the start of the formation of a greater Alliance of Rebels. But its all part of Disney's new canon. It had teething issues but Season 2 really helped it pick up.

A couple good quotes from the comments in the first link provided sort of address the question: "Why no Tie Striker later on, why Tie Fighters?"
It’s been addressed before; Different units across different planets had different compliments of equipment, vehicles, and armor models.
In Tokyo, even the same train line runs two or three different models of trains because it’s too much energy and too much money to upgrade them all at the same time. And some of the older sets are so dependable that they’re just going to keep fixing them until they disintegrate.
The Empire spanned the entire galaxy, like hell everyone had the same model and version of everything. It would be a logistical nightmare.
AS I understand it, the locals from the “original” trilogy are mostly on the fringes of the galaxy. I am betting that Rogue One takes place on md-to-core worlds where the tech starts and then spreads outwards. They didn’t need Cargo drops on Hoth so we didn’t see those. It’s about spreading resources around as needed. A dash of handwavium can’t hurt either.

@ Da Kommizzar
Very true, I mean, it didn't bother me that the new ships hadn't been seen in the original trilogy before. But, I hadn't even thought that the original movies were set pretty far onto the fringes o the galaxy. Shoot, I can't imagine trying to update everybody's stuff at the same time.
The Star Wars universe is massive, no doubt that each planet and their Imperial Forces had different ships and equipment to match their mission as well.
