Do you all give your models promotions when they preform like champions?

I ask because today I promoted my deathwing champion to Brother Broahmadies because he issued a challenge to a eldar spirit seer with armor bane/fleshbane and init 5 and keeped him busy for 3 turns

In the same game I promoted a bike sergeant to brother jinkens because he managed to make every jink from a wraith lord, 2 eldar takes (can't remember their names) and a group of gardiens, survived the assault from the guardians, made them fall back and took out like 4 of their models on his on as a lone bike sergeant.

Do you guys do the same?

To many unpainted models to count.

I don't do promotions but I do give medals.

I have a sergeant with a 'posthumous' medal for sacrificing himself, challenging a Chapter Master, in order to buy time for his men to contest the objective at the end of a game.

My Company Commander has a medal for killing a Chapter Master in CQC.

My Deathstrike Missile Launcher has a Commendation for ramming an Imperial Knight to slow it down.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

My models get names for feats of true orkishness. Like the time my runtherd and his grots withstood a tankshock from a rhino, letting me keep the point, and then charging and glancing the rhino to death. He is now Bellogob da Tankherda.

Then I have Bellowgob da Titan-Killa, a killsaw meganob who was able to get somewhere around 5 pens on a titan, 3 of which were 6's on the results table, which let me roll high enough to take out that titan in one round of combat. He even managed to survive the explosion, somehow.

Yes, sometimes. All my models are named are have their rank written in front of their names.
I once promoted Pte. Doughlas to Cpl. after he singlehandedly killed 3 Chaos terminators with his plasmagun.
He also got a Medal of Honor, which I painted on his flak vest.

That sounds like you are recognising them by name more than actually promoting them. Either way, I like the idea of doing that, or indeed buying new units to represent promoted units; I believe one of the members of White Dwarf upgraded his Tau army with more Battlesuits to represent the Fire Warriors that became Shas'ui.

I used to put kill markings on some of my Leman Russ tanks similar to Peregrine and his aircraft - these have been wiped off though as I was not happy with the paintjob of my models

Yes. I've promoted various sergeant/equivalents for a job well done. For example a Wolf Guard Pack Leader got given WGBL promotion after he felled a Hive Tyrant with a power axe hit.

I've promoted a squad of guard to vets from standard platoon because they kept killing stuff consistently.

HQ units occasionally get trophies. Had to make a new Wolf Lord after he killed a Demon Prince in single combat. Hung the head of a Demon Prince from his mount.

Love doing stuff like that.

Do you demote them again / paint over the kill marks when they die ignominiously?

anytime they kill them selves with a plasma gun, i put a tick mark on the gun so it hopfully reminds them how many people have died using this weapon if that counts.

I like the idea of giving my guys characteristics, so that I can see them as more than just rank and file. I'll do it for anything they do that is spectacular, though. Whether it be good or bad. Like Misfire Mike, the worst Plasma Caliver shooter of the Skitarii forces. He has managed to blow up more than anyone has a right to. I'll scream at him before rolling the dice to get his act together.

Unfortunately no one has managed to do anything impressive in a good sense in my army.

I run a motif about one of my wraithguard weapons being blessed by Kurnous itself or just one of the wraithguards are indeed the soul of a long forgotten marksman within eldar lore.

since the first day i faced an IK on 6th my wraithguard has become quite adept to actually roll 3-4 strings of 6's that can change the whole curse of a battle.

1- while performing overwatch on 6th ed : 6 to hit, then another 6 to pen, 6 for the vehicle table and finally another 6 for effects... 4 hullpoints vs an IK that just died at I5 from my Farseer witchblade.
2- shooting a Mawloc on 6th ed: hit by catalyst with -3BS so needing a 6 for hit: rolled a 6 for hit then 6 to wound Id and Mawloc is gone
3- nearly every match i face our local nyd player on 7th (who often runs 3x flyrants): i always get to hit and vaporize one of them with the D-weapon just the 1st turn i shoot at him
4- facing a Stompa who already had vaporized all my wraithguard units since turn 1: the last remaining one shoots at it hit with a 6 , 6 on d-table then another 6 to check the total hull points.. 12 total with a single shoot

I had a Thunderfire cannon in 5th edition murder 15 Lootas in its first round of shooting. It then drew tons of fire and got charged by a nob squad, who all whiffed. The Techmarine gunner killed one nob with his servo arm and overran the squad. When his gun was killed in shooting, he joined a Tactical squad and led multiple charges against the Ork hordes, earning glory and killing many, many Orks.

To this day, he is known as Techmarine Bob.

I used a space marine sergeant who, without any upgrrade / gear to do hand to hand, killed my opponent's assault squad Veteran Sergeant with power weapon, to make the sergreant of my sternguards.
So he had a promotion, from Tactical ton Sternguard ^^

What will you do, when you aircraft has too many kills ? Aren't you afraid to mess up all you paint with too many marks ?

Funniest stuff ever, while the other almost full squad of grots broke and ran off the table.

My guard have a sort of promotion system. Any man that survives a match goes into a separate section of my case to be used as part of veteran squads in my next list. So if I have a game where I do well and lose few models, the next game I play will have a higher portion of veteran squads in them. Veterans that survive a game become eligible to join Company Command squads if I need the models. If a veteran or company comand squad member dies, they get put back into the regular guard section to simulate new recruits. If regular guard die they go into a conscript section and I have more conscripts for my next match.

Commanders have the same sort of idea, lieutenants that survive become eligible to be used as my Captains and if a captain dies he becomes a ne lieutenant. Commisars become lord commisars with enough distinction.

I like it because it gives my army a nice feel of being in constant war where it replaces it's loses and survivors become better, without actually using a campaign system. I feel more like a military leader where I have to make do with what I have at my disposal.sometimes there are field promotions just so I can make a legal list, but overall I try stick to my system as much as possible. I find it's made me play more tactical as I'm not using the same list every time and I learn a little more about ways to use my army every game.

Having gotten inspired by that particular white dwarf, my tau have a somewhat expanded rank system more in line with modern day armies. So every rank has a veteran rank. After each game I mark the bases of all my survivors and erase the marks of any casualties. Any model that survives five consecutive battles gets a promtion to a veteran and veteran markings on the armour, and if they survive a further 5 they get a second promotion to new duties. 5 survived battles also works as a checkpoint so they don't drop to zero. If they get up to 10 I'll keep the model as a squad leader and purchase a new unit for him/her to lead.

Some models also get recognised for feats of bravery with either names or additional markings on the armour.

I quite enjoy it and gives a more peraonal feel to the army while not requiring to much work. So far only my etheral and coldstar have five marks but some of my battlesuits and pathfinders are at three or four marks.

My armies:
vior'la sept 12k
Erik Morkai's great company 6k
dark mechanicus, the dearth of hope, 8k
rothwyr morwan's company 1,5k
Adeptus custodes 2k
AoS, The forgotten order, SE, 3k

I recently promoted my inquisitor to terminator armour. He single handedly killed a big scary monster or its equivalent each game in a campaign without getting shot down so I gave him a promotion and bought him termi armour after he levelled up and became a true close combat monster. It took quite some sculpting to make the base terminator look the same as in his power armour + the decorative stuff he owned. This was fun but tons of work and I have no plans at all to to this for any of my orks in the near future.

I must admit the whole idea to promote a boy to a nob or a nob to a warbozz is alluring. It is just that it takes so much time to sculpting it while I still have so much unpainted mini's ; )

I didn't name them myself but I have a squad of Sky Claws called the Cheap Shots.

Deepstruck into Tau and after surviving laughable rounds of Interceptor, flaming a unit of Marker Drones to death they then survived a deal with the devil type round of normal shooting without taking a casualty. The Cheap shots were then charged by Kroot. Three Bolt Pistols rolled six to hit and two succeeded in wounding, two Flamers added another six wounds to the pool and the Kroot unit disappeared before they even made contact. The Cheap Shots got another round of shooting off and killed another few models before I made the mistake of charging them into a squad of Fire Warriors. Marker Drones lit them up and the Fire Warriors reduced them to a single model, he got a single drawn combat with the Fire Warriors but lost the next round before I could rescue him.
85 point unit kills off a squad of Marker Drones, a small squad of Kroot and half a squad of Fire Warriors. I'm not sure what the points differential was but my opponent called everything that didn't go his way a 'Cheap Shot' so they got the label of Cheap Shots.
Haven't pulled off anything quite so epic since, their best effort since that match was a Frag grenade that scattered out of a squad of Dark Eldar and into their Warp Spider allies killing two of them.
I'm not sure how much Warp Spiders cost but considering most of the Eldar Codex is undercosted I'd assume it's less than two and a half squads of Tau Chaff units.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

I once had a group of Necron Warriors get assaulted by a squad of Wulfen. The Wulfen proceeded to kill all but one Warrior in the first combat phase, he didn't even hit. That last Warrior rolled double "1"s on his break check. He then managed to pass every freaking armor save and RP for the next two game turns (4 combat phases) and bring down two of the Wulfen before finally succumbing to the Will of the Dice. When his consciousness returned to the tomb world, it was placed in the body of an Immortal (I put his head on one of my Immoral models). I swear this guy was Vargard Obyron in disguise.

P.S. That modified Immortal model is usually the last man standing in his unit. It may be time to promote him to Lychguard.

I take a bit of a cavalier approach - 3-4 colour base, and then any models that survive a game I win by 1 point get extra details, colours or other bling.

Consequently, i'm seriously considering silver plating my Vulture Punisher, on top of custom decals and kill markings.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.
