Henvic.

I've found that regardless of your list, there's fun to be had in the middle tables. Players there don't feel like they are going to "lose something" by not winning with full points.

In contrast, at the top tables, people get irritable and frightened of losing those top spots.

There is also a direct correlation between how hard the list is and how likely you are to be at the top tables, but a list groomed and improved by all the mathhammer wizards on the internet doesn't assure your place there.

TLDR: The list isn't whats important, it's where you are in the pack that usually determines "fun games." If you usually roll mid pack with a competitive list, take it and have fun. If you want a fluffy list, take that too, but understand it might affect you adversely.

I will second Thunderfrog's advice. It took me a few tourneys to get my first win (just one game!), even after having played 40k for several years. A few more years to win a RTT at all.

Laugh at mistakes and ask for advice afterward, over a pint

Enjoy it. My tourney record hovers around fifty percent, for years now, so it is always about fun.

Bring a carry tray to move models between rounds, bed trays or ones from fast food restaurants work well. Printed list, two or three copies
Small, light tape measure
Cigar or maybe GW box to roll dice in

That ought to do for now.

Also, get some practice in with your list beforehand. You can do some really fun things with a list you know well, and even set yourself little personal challenges once you know what's going on.

Knowing how your units work together is a big part of not getting trounced in a way that will kill the fun for you.

Trust me, no matter what damage they have the potential to do, single-shot weapons always flatter to deceive in 40k.                                                                                                       Rule #1

Any good tournament will have a "tier" system built into it. You may have a couple of rough games in the beginning, but you should quickly find yourself paired against players who are roughly at your same level. Tournaments are a lot of fun; it's definitely worth your time and effort.

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment.
