Hey all,

Just looking for some assistance with building a marine list from what I have.
Any thoughts on additional mini's to fill ''competitive holes" are appreciated too,
though the main idea for myself is the painting aspect.

Had marines for quite while now, if memory serves some of the figures date back to
around 2003. Being some what tight fisted, I figured now that I have a lot more time on my
hands I'd get stuck into cleaning them back and giving them a fresh coat of paint.

Keeping in mind the last time I actually played a game of 40k was about the same time
the Storm Ravens got released. So I really have no idea what the go with all this "demi company"
ect stuff is all about. At the time I had a growing interest the new blood angels codex
so some of the miniatures I have will probably end up with a lot of tear drop insignia being removed lol.

So this is as follows the current model selection I have that I have been able to dig up,
Not much of a vehicle count admittedly :\

HQ,

Terminator Cpt: Term arm, storm bolter, P/sword

Chaplain: P/fist + Crozius (will probably use him as the minotaurs character chap where viable)

Captain: Bolter, P/sword.

Have a few figures put aside to play around with potentially making a VV squad or something of the likes
if they are even worth while points/meta wise.

Unit of 6, one is an apothecary, 1x Pls/pistol + P/fist. the other 4 are yet to be equipped other than bolters

Elites,

6X Terminators: Sgt with P/sword, 1X H/flamer though do have the storm bolter as well.

(contemplating trying to convert the unit to have THSS, would use spears to try and keep with the
aesthetic appeal of Asterion Moloc, though not really sure as far as game play goes whats more advantageous).

I also have some dreads.... not sure how many? 2-4
Was my fav mini back in the day and Im fairly sure between those and my Chaos I Had like 8 all up at one point lmao.
Though I do know one is a Blood angels DC/Lib/Furi. Another is the ooooold metal dread. rest are... some... where?

Troops,

I also have a bunch of scouts. heavy bolter, few snipers and like 4-6 bolt guns and a sgt from memory.

16x tact marines: 2x of which are sgt, 2x flamers.
(I know I have around another 6-10 just a matter of scrounging around to find them)

Fast,

7 X Assault Marines: Sgt with TH, going to equip 2X flamer.
(also have a bunch of death company (6-10+) and respective packs to flesh out the unit or make two of)

Heavy,

Land Raider Crusader,

2X Storm Ravens: both are magnetized and admittedly not finished being assembled to make
them easier to finish painting.

Devistators: 3X missles, 1XH/bolter, 1X Las/C. 2X Plas/C
(also looking at converting the H/bolter to the Minotaurs Dev sgt character possibly).

So as far as I can tell that's the majority of what I have.
I know its lacking transport badly, Would prefer not to have to spend more $ though I realize 0
Rhinos is going to be a massive problem.

So any thoughts and advice/guidance in constructing a list that can at least be competitive would really
appreciated. shall post a few pictures at some stage of whats currently been (re)painted

Cheers,

Hey there! Welcome to Dakka and back to 40k!

The way armies can be organised now has changed quite drastically since 5th, but the important thing is to remember that you aren't forced to use any of the new ways, you can stick to the old method (now called a "Combined Arms Detachment" aka CAD - 1-2 HQ, 2-6 Troop etc. etc.).

I think the easiest way of describing the new methods is like a set menu in a restaurant - you get to pick from certain collections of dishes, and it works out cheaper, but you don't get all the options.

Formations are collections of specific units, but give you bonus special rules to offset the restrictions.
A 'Demi Company' is one of the formations included in the SM codex - 3 tactical squads, an assault squad, a dev squad and either a chaplain or captain. In your case you could tick all those boxes, but then you'd be left struggling to fit your other units into the army.

Adding to the confusion are the "Decurion"-style army-building options. The basic Space Marine example of that is called a "Gladius Strike Force" (although they do have other examples of it. Other factions only get the one). This style of army is like taking a detachment, but instead of getting unit slots (i.e. mandatory HQ / Troop, optional Elite etc. etc.), you get Formation slots (i.e. Mandatory Demi-Company, optional other formations etc.).
This sort of thing is common in most competitive styles of play, as players make the most of the bonus special rules, but is by no means the only way to go for more casual play.

So, for the moment, let's just ignore all of that and concentrate on something simple:

Chaplain Ivanus Enkomi.
Dreadnought.
Terminator squad (6), heavy flamer.
Scout squad (5), boltguns, teleport homer.
Scout squad (5), 4x sniper rifle, 1x heavy bolter, camo cloaks.
Tactical squad (7), boltguns.
Assault squad (7), jump packs, 2x flamer, vet sarge with TH.
Devastator squad (7), 3x ML, 1x Lascannon.
Land Raider Crusader.
Stormraven Gunship, twin multi-melta.

Total of 1500 ish. We get around the lack of rhinos by having scouts as the main troops, the terminators can either deep strike (with the option of using the scout's homer) or start in the land raider. The tactical squad can either embark in the storm raven or the land raider (if the terminators aren't using it), or try and tromp up the board under their own power. Chaplain joins whichever unit is in the land raider.
Assault terminators would be better for this strategy, but working what what you've got it still works with shooty termis.
