soooo in my quest for knowledge and things I would probably never have the time for, I would like to ask the good people of dakka : how do you make a plasma obliterator? It's probably the fortification I want to use the most out of all of them but it's either super expensive or not available.

Anyone have any ideas on the bits I would use? I think the base would be a bastion, but beyond that I don't know.

I would take a drop pod and mod it to somehow have a cannon inside. Like it is dropped down from a ship before the battle

That is already a thing

It comes in missile and cannon variety. It could definitely be modded into a plasma variety, but it might be better to use one of these instead. It's already the right size, and I'm sure a large plasma cannon (like one from a tank kit) could be made to fit pretty readily.

I think the tower section is a bit smaller than a bastion, although most opponents probably wouldn't care either way. Personally I'd use Cities of Death terrain panels, but that depends on what you have available.

The cannon is the modelling problem - the standard one is longer than a Rhino(!) and the shape isn't easy to convert. (There are Titan equivalents, but they're ridiculously expensive.) If I was making one, my fluff would be that the model represented an emergency battlefield modification and so is a tangled mess of cables and techy bits.

One of these;

with an executioner plasma cannon would be the easiest, it wouldn't be as big but it'd do for a gaming piece.

Yes, for minimum modelling effort, the Vengeance Weapon Battery would be the best conversion base - just a case of changing the weapon. (Some photos imply the Vengeance is a bit smaller than the Plasma Obliterator, but some extra height would easily be added via a scenic base.)

Hadn't thought of the Russ executioner plasma cannon - relatively easy/cheap to find, but a bit small, although maybe two of them cobbled together, or one 'super-charged' with extra techy bits?

I you want to go "big plasma", the forgeworld warhound plasma blastgun could be a good idea...

https://www.forgeworld.co.uk/en-US/Chaos-Warhound-Titan-Plasma-Blastgun

But it does throw the idea of "not super expensive" out of the window...

Yea, it does. If I take it all together (bastion + Blastcannon) then it would be 90$ for a crappy conversion (no hood on the cannon) that would be easy to mess up.

also, do note that the actual model is taller than an imperial knight. A Simple vengence battery would not be big enough.

Does it have to be a kitbash from GW components?
And are you trying to build a copy or your own interpretation?
Plasma-coils, for example, are very easily modelled using coiled wire or ribbon cable from old computers. The plasma barrel with all the vents etc tends to be more difficult but if you are willing to take artistic licence with this (I don't personally like the oversized plasmagun look) then you could scratch build a convincing 40k plasma weapon and plonk it on top of a tall tower- the one from the fortress of redemption would work.

That is a pretty good idea, actually. I may just go to a surlus center to look at some stuff I could find.

An upside down flower pot could make a good base for the tower and can be dolled up with card gothic arches and doors from CoD kits.
For example Terraformer's silo, from the gallery:

I think a CoD tower or Bastion + Icarus cannon + LR Plasma is your best bet.

Maybe replace the cannon with another energy weapon? As long as it doesn't look like anything else no one would really give you any grief.

Or something else entirely, like a few pskyers wired up to fire a death blast.

For the cannon itself. Take a look at deodorant bottles/cans, torches or bicycle lights for that slightly phallic plasma cannon shape, cover it in some greebles, wot-nots and some ribbing and you'll soon have something that resembles a ........ oh my.
You may even be able to keep the torches functionality for extra zzzzap.

I was looking at the resin maker Blood and Skulls and they do some large plasma cannons. Prices aren't bad either.
