Would you or people at tournaments consider this customization of the Imperial Guard Hydra modeling for an advantage?



compared to the original hydra

Modelling for advantage generally entails things like having your squads lying down on their bases, so they can hide out of line of sight behind walls. Or putting something on a much larger/smaller base than it normally would have.

Your conversion is about the same size as the original, with major features in about the same places, so I don't think anyone could reasonably claim that it's modelling for advantage.
(I do think the guns on your one look kinda dinky compared to the original, but that has nothing to do with the rules, and I would still happily play against it)

I am not voting. I don't know if ITC or other major tournement would allow it. I would have no problem, and it looks like your barrels are slightly shorter, giving you a minor disadvantage.

It looks like someone took the ADL gun and a Chimera before the Hydra was actually a model. And not a bad one, either.

Considering the prevalence of scratch-built before GW started actually dropping such units or actually making those models, it would be the same as someone fielding their 4th Edition wood and plasticard Drop Pod.

The Hydra had an official FW model years before the ADL even came out

It looks like your local tech adept might have some heretical tendencies.

Other then that there is nothing wrong with it in my opinion. It is clear what it should do and the shape of the model is close enough for me. But I still can't vote since I can't speak for other TO's. I would allow it that is all I can say.

It looks fine to me, don't see an issue with it for modeling a hydra.

Aesthetically though, it could do with something to cover the gun ports. Other than that, its a fantastic model!

While true, I should have stated that it was from before the Hydra was a Citadel model. Not everyone had or has access or knowledge of ForgeWorld options (unfortunately), and they tended to be expensive to purchase and deliver at the time.

I would have no problem with it;; its possibly a little small when drawing LOS TO it, but the shorter barrels balance that out a little as it is a disadvantage to the owning player.

Looks more like modeling for a disadvantage, to me. I won't even blink an eyelash at it, beyond a "that's a neat way to do it" comment.

The hydra tl autocannons has a range of 72" so the short barrel disadvantage doesnt even matter.

Infact as one of my opponents pointed out, there is no big gaping space between the 2 sets of ac so there is no blind spot like when having side sponsons on a predator.

That is a small advantage for this dinky hydra to be able to draw line of sight with both ac to a flyer who maybe hiding in half cover behind a building.

Also there is a small height advantage /disadvantage. Because it can peek over low terrain, the hydra can shoot out but be shot at in cover.

The disadvantage I noticed was tha turret being taller, therefore harder to hide. The extra height for the barrels is negligible. There might be a small advantage in the turret being slightly forward, but it's a 72" gun on a 72"x48" table, so that's negligible too.
