Does anyone know of a paint that gives off a mother of pearl type effect? I want to paint Saruman in his "many colours" form and it's about the only way I can think of doing it without making him look like he stole Joseph's Technicolour Dream coat.

'Vallejos metallic medium' with some careful colour mixing and light glazes could be a way to go.
Perhaps with some of their 'crackle medium' sparingly applied.

Check the craft stores for pearl medium. It's pearlescent paint without the pigment added.

I know Michael's carried it a couple years back; shouldn't be too hard to find.

Shame I don't have a picture of it but I painted a 40k navigator with a nebula-esque robe. That took a silver base layer and repeated targeted red, blue and black ink washes, interspersed with silver highlights/drybrushing over the folds of cloth.

I'm trying to paint a clear green laquer over metal effect at the moment using many layers of gloss varnish and inks.

Maybe try having the plain cloth colour as the base on the robes with a range of thinned colour varnishes over the top, interspersed with subtle base colour highlighting where needed? top it off with maybe some final gloss varnish with a tiny amount of bright silver to give an extra sheen?

What you are looking for is called opalescent paint. I've never used it on something as small as a mini, and I'm going to bet the more expensive it is the more the effect will pop. Good luck.
