So I know the Emperor's Champion is essentially just a more expensive Captain, but the model is just too cool to let it sit there and collect dust. I'm a fairly new BT player so I'd like to ask all Veteran BT players, how do you run your EC?

So far, I've only been doing 500 pt games with a few friends, so I haven't been faced with very much. However, their armies are expanding faster than anticipated, and i fear my EC might make for an easy kill versus anything stronger than what I'm facing now.

How I've been using him so far is running him with a 10 man Crusader squad outfitted with chainswords and pistols, going mainly after other troop units and non-independent characters so as to mostly avoid challenges. They do a pretty good job at tearing through most of what they face, generally CSM, Dark Eldar, Necrons, and Skitarii. More than a few close calls against my girlfriend's DE Succubus have drawn the EC's beefiness into question. My end goal for 750+ point games is to still have the EC avoid other independent characters, and have him run alongside a crusader melee squad out of the front of a Land Raider, or at least soften up anything bigger than him before letting him run in and go into a challenge.

I put my EC in a crusader squad in a Land Raider.

I usually give my crusaders at least one initiate, and a Sword Brother with power sword. Always, always challenge with the EC (unless he's gonna die in the challenge, then just use the SB), and remember that excess wounds in challenges carry over to the rest o the opposing unit (but additional wounds outside of a challenge do not enter the challenge).

I love the EC to bits. Bet HQ I've ever had.

Side Note: Aim for expensive units with 2+ or 3+ saves, but that lack anything better than a 5+ Invuln. You can happily kill them with weight of attachs from the crusaders, and the EC loves shanking sergeants/veteran sergeants.

Essentially what I run is a 10 man Crusader squad in a Land Raider, the SB has a power fist (probably not the best for his role) and everyone else stays stock except for one of the Initiates that has a power fist as well. The EC tags along for emotional support.

I haven't used one, but I imagine it'd be great for either:
1. Honour Guard to get some more I4-5 AP2
2. Assault Centurions to get a 4++ in the squad to tank occasional plasma shots and get more attacks in general in the squad

So those would be my main areas to focus on.

Emperor's Champion - The third Black Templars character. For 140 points you get a Captain with reduced BS (meh), W and A and unique equipment and rules that make him one of the best Character hunters in the game. First things first, The Black Sword is a S+2 AP2 Master crafted melee weapon that is not Unwieldy/Specialist/Two-Handed, so he gets +1 Attack for two weapons and strikes at initiative. Secondly, he has a 2+/4++ armor, making him pretty sturdy. Lastly, he must always issue or accept challenges when possible...which is not as bad as it sounds, considering that during a challenge he re-rolls failed To Hit rolls and inflicts Instant Death on any roll of 6 to wound. Bring it on![spoiler]
