Hello all,

In a game I was playing last night, my opponent insisted that if a single member of a vehicle squadron enters difficult terrain, the entire unit takes a single difficult terrain test. I didn't argue the point at the time, but I think this is incorrect.

According to my opponent's interpretation, if one member of a three tank Leman Russ squadron entered difficult terrain, the entire unit would then have to take a test. This indicates that the entire unit could potentially get damaged and become immobilized, by a single member driving on rough terrain.

I always thought that one difficult terrain test was taken for each member of the squadron entering difficult terrain, Ex: two of the three tanks enter difficult terrain, one test for each of the two entering is initiated. The third tank in open terrain is unaffected.

I was looking through the BRB section on vehicle squadrons and couldn't find anything supporting my opponent's interpretation. Thoughts?

As far as I'm aware you only take the test for the one actually moving in the terrain.

He may have been getting confused by when infantry have one member move through terrain the whole unit go at the slowest speed, even if they are nowhere near the terrain themselves

Infantry/non-vehicles/non-move through cover test to see how far a unit moves through difficult terrain as the whole unit. The same test per model moving through for dangerous terrain. Dangerous terrain is almost always difficult.

Vehicles treat difficult as dangerous and are not slowed.

So vehicles, singular or squadroned, always test for immobilized per model entering, exiting, or moving through difficult but can move their full distance if passed.

And, while poorly defined, moving through means starting and ending movement in the same piece of terrain so you will at most take 2 tests: 1 right before you enter difficult and 1 right before you exit; ending your move with any of your vehicle in the terrain will not result in a second test(but will cause one in your next movement phase as you leave).
