Hey guys - just wondering about how additional CCW are working right now, since it's changed a few times over the years. I'm mostly just painting & modelling a new army for now to use once it's done, and basing the build on the current rules (yeah, I know they might well change next year).

I'm wanting to build a "lots of shooting" tac squad, so going with a Heavy Bolter and Plasma Gun. For the Sergeant, I'm wanting to give him a Storm Bolter. I've read that a Power Fist is often recommended for Sgts, and even as a weapon to go with the Storm Bolter. Wouldn't a Bolt Pistol rather than storm bolter be preferable to go with a Power Fist, because of the +1A from the pistol?

Power Fists are Specialist Weapons preventing the pistol granting an extra attack.

For the record it's been like that for a few editions now. The only thing that changed recently is that Power Fists can be used with other Specialist Weapons to get a +1 attack; prior to 6th edition you needed another Power Fist to grant +1 attack.

Since 3rd.

The only change(in 6th) was that instead of calling out power fists lightning claws, and thunderhammers only gaining a bonus attack when paired with themselves; they gained the specialist rule which allows a 2-weapon bonus with any second specialist weapon.

This change made fist and claw a popular choice as you always gain the attack bonus but can now choose to swing at I with a moderate ap and shred or at 2x s punching through any armor at I1.

A fist and not-pistol gun will never be able to make attacks at a higher I-step, but gains the longer range/combi weapon shot.

A fist and pistol can use the pistol in melee for higher I.
