Hello Dakka,

I was reading through the AOS book (the first one), and there is a section where GW talks about some tips to get an army painted up.

They obviously recommend doing batches of 5 guys a piece, saving the big guys for last to keep motivation towards them and so on and so forth.

However - what is interesting, is that they mention that you should basecoat ALL your models before you pick them up and individually go through each and "finish" them.

Do you do this? i can see the advantage in that you get your army painted to a "tabletop minimum" and can play with those right away. However, i've just never thought of doing it that way, so i'd like to know if anyone is doing it and what they think about the process?

Also, With a basecoat on each model, all you need is pretty much to wash and touch-up on areas that need it, and it's done, right? so not much work after that part?

Thanks

I generally go through every rank and file model with the same color before moving on. This saves me time from opening and closing bottles to get more paint out, as well as waste less paint (if you got a wet palette the paint dries a lot slower so you end up using a lot more of it. And obviously you only need to clean up once rather than after every model).

If I remember this method was called "Assembly line" painting, as it functions like a factory assembly line where you apply one piece at a time.

As for how much work after basecoat, for tabletop quality models I usually go:

Basecoat > Touch-up > Wash > Highlight > Seal

I use to not highlight but later I found that the little detail makes a world of difference.

Hell, I'm not that bothered by the Stormraven. Why? Because, as it stands right now, it's "limited use".When it's shoehorned in to the Codex: Space Marines, then yeah. I'll be irked.

When I'm editing alot, you know I have a gakload of homework to (not) do.

Personally id say no but only if you intend on playing while painting.

dont really want to chip the base coat off while handling or playing them.
