Hi Dakka! For ages I've had this nagging thought about creating my own space marine chapter based off of Imperial Fists (with a touch of Templars). First off I've been a fan of the Fists for a while but can't bear the thought of painting yellow (not after my current anguish with white Tau). I've toyed with some ideas around a red theme but trying to make it a bit different to a Blood Angels lookalike.

They're going to be roughly codex compliant with a few twists. Their theme is that they follow the usual Fists stoicism with a nod towards Dorn's rare (yet terrifying) bouts of rage.

Here's their emblem, on two backgrounds Im considering.

Spoiler:

So I present to you my first second draft:

Spoiler:

Spoiler:

So basically: Mephiston Red armour
Light Grey Pauldrons
Black/Very Dark Grey Pauldron trim (5th company)
Ushabti Bone wings

I'm still thinking about sergeant/vet/vet sergeant distinctions on the heads but I'm really not sure any other colours would fit.
Let me know what you guys think.

Edit: Added alternative scheme. Please Ignore the Blood Raven lookalikes.

A most intriguing proposition... I shall support this! Kinda reminds me of the Blood Ravens now that I think about it...
Also, is there a site that makes those for you? Or did you draw those yourself?

Blood who?

They are quite similar but they do have cream pauldrons not grey. To be fair that's a likeness that Im worried about people mistaking them for. Perhaps I could go with red trim on the pauldrons and black won't be necessary to further distinguish from them.

I made them here http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smp.php and just put them together in photoshop.

I plan to make my own transfers using the chapter logo I designed.

What you've showed us is the Blood Ravens chapter color scheme. They are successors to and unknown chapter and the founder is still unknown:

The hilarious thing is I actively tried to stay away from it and made little changes along the way and ended up straight back there

Edit: Come on theyre a little different

In the Grim Future of 40K there are so many successor chapters that you can actualy do whatever you want. They can be Blood Angels successors with those colors, but to use Crimson Fists tactics.

Of course. But they could just as well be imperial fist successors because I want them to be. Besides I quite like the red fist overlaid on top of the templar symbol.

Any ideas on how I can make the scheme different to distinguish them from the blood ravens / blood angels?

I am also making Imperial/Crimson fists successor chapter and the first thing that you should consider, If you ask me, is not the color, but the emblem. Their unique symbol that distinguish them among the other Astartes and Son's of Regal Dorn. Do you have any custom design for a custom decal in mind or you are willing to make this by free hand. My Imperial Fists successors are called Crimson Wings and their symbol is a red wing. But enought about my marines. If you invent really good chapter emblem there is no need to change your scheme. However, if you don't want to be related to Blood Angels and Ravens you can just make the split color scheme approach. Unfortunately I am not an expert of how a good color scheme work:

That sounds like a good concept for your homebrew. The problem with split schemes is theyre an absolute nightmare to paint. My logo design is in the op in between the first and second marine. Basically a red fist on top of a black templar symbol.

Oh, sorry, It seems that I did not paid much attention to the image. I see that you want a mix of Crimson Fists and Black Templars. That is red and black in one, so why don't you just use the Exorcist chapter color scheme? http://vignette1.wikia.nocookie.net/warhammer40k/images/b/b5/Mark_VII_Brother_Initiate.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110226093314

Funnily enough minus the black power pack that is the exact scheme I started with. I added the grey to the pauldron so that the red fist would show clearer on my logo. But due to printing constraints ive had to add a black outline around the fist. So I could go back to the red pauldron. Only thing is I felt the grey broke the model up quite nicely. Decisions decisions

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I've settled on my colours and design for the chapter logo. Just need to decide what backgroud would best on the shoulder pads. Im feeling grey but then like others have said I think that might be getting close towards Blood Ravens.

Also if anyone wants the shapes for these I have them and can share. It means you can rescale and colour in whichever way you like without affecting the image quality.

The first one has contrast and it's better, imo. although it looks a bit like the Blood Ravens. The second is more Crimson Fists lookish, I don't know really. It's up you.

Yeah, Dalin has it figured out. The Grey works best, but you might have issues with the Blood Ravens feel. Might just need to move past that and go with a darker grey.

Have you thought about going with yellow pauldrons on red armor, like the Crusade era Fists which used yellow pauldrons on black armor? Yellow would get enough contrast to make the black and red on your emblem pop and would be sufficiently differenced so people would not mistake them for Blood ravens.
