Not sure where to put this?

What is the difference between a formation vs a detachment?

If you just run one can you still be a battle forged army.

Like the armored strike force from the space marine codex? If i just filled that out would i be battle forged or no?
If i do it using the Angels of Death supplement does that change it?

What is better to go with.

I have a basically a fifth edition Blood angel army where you could run a ton of preds and i was thinking that i would just run them as iron hands,
from the strike force so they would have the it will not die special rule with some tech marines on bikes.

Thoughts and help would be appreciated.

There is no difference between a formation and a detachment other than a formation lacks a defined Force Organization Chart.

Check out the rule book sections on army building and detachments, not with mine right now so can't tell you the page number but have a look in the index and you'll find what you're looking for.

All formations are detachments.

If every model in your army fits into 1 (and only 1) detachment and you meet all the requirements of every detachment then your army is battle forged.

A Combined Arms Detachment is a type of detachment
A Space Marine Demi Company is a formation detachment
A Librarius Conclave is a formation detachment
A necron Decurion is a detachment composed of formations
A Harlequin Masque is a type of detachment

If you had enough points and could meet the requirements of the required units for all of the above detachments, you could run this as a battle forged army.

The Unending Host can only be used while being Battle Forged

Doesnt battle forged mean obj sec troops?

I was told that formations and detachments besides CAD dont necessarily mean obj sec troops.

Each detachment / formation, if legally taken, gains the special rules listed with it. For CAD and Allies detachments, their special rule is that Troops have Objective Secured.

No, battle forged doesn't mean obj sec troops. Using a Combined Arms Detachment is what gives Obj Sec troops.

Battle Forged just means everything is in a detachment of some kind (doesn't have to be a CAD)
