Subject: Probably obvious but - transparent avatar background?

Hey guys,
This is probably obvious for the more computer savvy, but is it possible to make my avatar background transparent?
I tried it with the one I've got to the left here, using this online photoshop equivalent: http://www.pixlr.com
However, when I use the wand tool and delete the background, leaving a transparent layer behind it, it was showing up as a black background in my posts on Dakka. However, on my profile page, it was showing up as transparent. Is there something I'm doing wrong, or is it just not possible to have a transparent background on an avatar?
I thought I had use one previously is why I'm asking . Thank you for any tips!!

The avatar field in the forum threads and gallery have black boxes behind it (rather than borders), so transparent will show black in images.

Use gyazo to grab a tiny screenshot of Dakka's background colour (grey if you are like me), resize the picture to suit Dakka's avatar size, and put your normal picture on top of it.
It's what I did for my pictures on the Argent Archives.
With that said, white probably makes it easier to see what your avatar depicts.

Ah that is genius, Ashiraya! Had to adjust the brightness / contrast but that's the next best thing to transparent ^_^. Thanks!!

Of course the downside is that people using a different color theme will see a plain box behind your avatar. IMO it's best to make something that looks good no matter what the background is than to have a fake-transparent thing that only looks right on one theme.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

The alternative is to have a flat white box background.
This at least looks right on the default theme.

Good point, Peregrine! Tried a gradient now instead of transparent, too
