Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

According to the local store manager it is, and not just locally either.

Anyone know more?

I would imagine there are lots of places where that is the case, this part of Colorado, its not. I am one of the only dudes buying anything for it, but almost have 4 people from 0 so its something but 40k (and much more PP and Xwing) usually bump us.

I imagine it will balance out with the 40k release.

They haven't released a lot of new 40K in the past year, it's been all board games and AoS, so yea I can see it outselling 40k. People buy the new shiny stuff.

I can't think of anything after big some boxed games

There was the flyer book that everyone here seems to hate
Am I missing something?

Now AOS added 2 or 3 new army's and added points
The points thing got people from my area thinking of playing

Not surprising given all the solid AoS releases the last few months, but we'll see how the balance shifts with the Deathwatch releases. As someone mentioned earlier, people are going to buy the new shiny. AoS is finally coming into its own in my area, but I fully expect 40k to stay the best seller in the long run.

I kind of disagree with the "Buy the new shiny" theory. Unless you are just in it for the models (a minority for the most part), you aren't buying AoS stuff just because its new and shiny.

I think the GH has brought all those players that were on the fence (like me) into AoS. As a result, sales should be increasing significantly across the board for the entire range, not just the new stuff. It will level off after those new adopters are caught up though.

Well all that and rumors of a new edition on the horizon after 7th didn't really pan out s GW planned I imagine.

Honestly? When a new edition is on the horizon sales tend to slow.

...Then again anecdotal evidence is anecdotal, wait and see and all that jazz.

It got some, but after the generals handbook, most of the folks I managed to at least get to the fence went right back over to "Nope". While I was pretty impressed with the GH. It had the effect of convincing alot of folks here that the game was not worth it.

I've seen the exact opposite, but then everybody's area is going to be a bit different.

Company wise, no, it isn't. Not even close. It's more likely that store managers are claiming so to give people confidence in the game. After all, no one enjoys buying and painting an army only to find that the game is oop shortly after.

For me that was always the big thing in the beginning. AoS was such a radical departure from warhammer that it was going to alienate alot of people, if you are a rank and file fan and thats what you want to play, AoS will never be that game. Our local was a lot of folks who like ranked infantry and moving formations, I was one of the few older Mordheim players so was ok with the more loose ordered troops. AoS was DOA here due to it just wasn't a viable replacement. I had hoped that with the GH addind points and more manners of play it would be likely to get some of these guys onboard. but fundamentally it just doesnt scratch the itch. we started with about 30 WHFB, AoS cut us down to 4, got about 10 to "wait and see, give it a go when the GH comes out" it came out, I bought it, and then lost the other 10. I am not gonna say AoS is a global failure, but I will say it certainly has proven to be a local one here. I believe overall its probably doing ok, its no world sweeping great game but i can imagine in some places its the top dog. I have to usually drive an hour to go find a game of it. I have 6 game stores in a 20 minute drive around me, none of them allow AoS. some allow 40k, none of them carry either. so yeah this is definately a geographical thing based on local wants and likes.

Definitely agree. At best I'd say AoS is approaching 40k sales but still has quite a ways to go. 40k's the GW juggernaut for a reason.

@thekingofkings, that's really unfortunate to hear your nearby stores discourage AoS like that.

You've certainly earned my respect for being a positive voice in this community despite your local opposition.

Its quite simple AoS has a better ruleset at the moment.
I don't like the simplification and style of AoS but they at least have points for things, and on top of that all points are released at the same time creating some sort of a balanced game.
40k is a mess right now. You just can't do a fun random pickup game of 40k by just agreeing on a point total due to the huge point efficiency differences between their releases and all the stuff that doesn't even cost points. On top of that all most gw's really pushed AoS the last half year. I don't know about sales ( since I am not a shop owner or employee) but it sure is easier to find an opponent for a AoS game than it is to find a 40k player willing to play a game around here.

8th edition being right around the corner rumors started BEFORE 7th edition hit the shelves. There were quite a few people salty over the short life span of 6th edition.

But I'm going to agree with those who say there wasn't much released for 40K for people to get excited about. GW has admitted that a majority of sales for any product occur during it's release. That's why they try to hype everything just before it comes out, and push pre-orders.

Deathwatch codex hasn't been out a day and there are already some people trashing it, but everyone I know who was interested in it pre-ordered it, and a box of Death Masque, a week ago, based almost entirely on the hype.

AOS makes some great models whether or not you play the game or even GW games and a good variety now thats its gone beyond Stormcast.

40K does the same but more and more focussed on Marines and well yet more Marines.

It's wellwknown fact that models get most of their sales in first few months. That's why gw keeps pushing new releases. Without those sales would tank instantly.

no wonder is aos sells better.

i tryed 40k and i have not seen a more anti casual rules set in a long time.

im not saying they should do an aos copy, but atleast they should make a 40k light rules, and then keep the current concrete block for the hardcore players.

if it takes 4 A4 pages to learn more or less all about AoS, atleast 40k could bother to make quick rules for "pick up and play games"!

Maybe in models certainly not being played. Lots have gone to 9th Age or Kings of War and since GW makes great minis people buy them but they are not playing AoS. Where I am at now and I travel a lot so that's how I know at least on the East coast of the US how AoS is looking and its not good. but here in tampa there is about 4-7 that play. We just lost another player and a bunch went to KoW there was a huge tourney with 19 players. 9th Age has also started to pick up.

I'd say the most likely answer is your local store manager is BS'ing you to make you think it's doing well because people don't like buying in to games that are doing badly.

But it is likely in some areas it's doing better than 40k, especially in areas 40k was already doing really poorly. I'm sure there were some areas that WHFB outsold 40k as well.

Globally? I really sincerely doubt AoS is outselling 40k, if it is then 40k is in real bad trouble because GW's sales revenue dropped slightly this year, so if AoS outsold 40k it would mean 40k's revenue dropped in the realm of 50% in a single calendar year

Also your local manager is not going to know what goes on globally unless your local manager is one of the higher ups in GW, so if they told you anything about how GW is globally then they are almost certainly lying.

In my area currently AOS is outstripping 40k by a large amount.

But we are also in an AOS season. When we turn to our 40k campaign in January that pendulum will swing.

Here in the Chicago area 40k is still very much the mainstay game you can get most days. In the local gw to me its all aos all the time (except 1 table on Saturday for 40k). Aos is being picked up by more players all the time. Sure some people went to KOW and a some are playing 9th age. KOW has a following but most of those players were before the rage of sigmar. It seems that those stores that were mostly 40k are still mostly 40k but AOS is really on the rise I never have any issues picking up a game. If people question weather or not to buy into aos in my area just literally show up to one of the gw stores any day of the week to find 2-6 people playing and another half dozen watching the game.
