Just two more (propably pretty obwious) questions.

1) Can heroes join units? If not, how do you protect your heroes from mass shooting?

2) If something (in my case chaos shields) lets me turn away mortal wounds on 5+, that does not work on regular wounds, right?

1. No, and thus protecting them is very hard.

Your average hero does have 5+ wounds now, however, so they can take a bit more punishment. Alternatively you need to have some LOS blocking prices of terrain or units.

For me personally, I have a Freeguild General that is crucial to my army synergy. He is quite squishy with only 5 wounds so I most often position him behind a Steamtank to keep him out of LOS.

Lastly, it's very easy for Heroes to gain cover saves by moving onto some terrain.

2. Yes. If it states the save is against Mortal Wounds then it's only taken when mortal wounds are inflicted.

If, however, the model has an ability save against any "wounds inflicted" then this is taken against both and is also taken in addition to the saving throw on normal wounds. Lastly this kind of save against "wounds inflicted" is taken after damage is calculated.

For example the Fyreslayers have such an ability, a 6+ save against any wounds inflicted. If they where shot at by a cannon (which is one shot but D6 damage) the attack would be resolved as follows: Roll to hit, Roll to wound, Roll 1 saving throw dice, if the save is unsuccessful determine damage (roll D6), roll a dice for the ability save for each of the wounds inflicted. So if a 5 was rolled on the damage dice, roll 5 dice to see if any save.

Ok, thanks for clarification.

Just another small question that just came to mind: Can you shoot into melee in AoS? If not my chaos heroes would be somewhat safer if locked in combat, right?

sorry if those are dumb questions, but me and my group never played AoS, but want such questions cleared beforehand

Yes, you can shoot in and out of melee. A group of archers in melee could even shoot out of their melee into another enemy unit in another melee. Basically there are no restrictions. Bear in mind it might be possible to get LOS blocked when your hero is in combat, but it's not likely as they only need to see a feather or finger tip to target.

Ok thanks. I guess that makes AoS tactically really different than 40k
