So I've been toying with some of my old Ork Boyz, and thought about putting them on some 32mm bases to see how they look, as I have a few scattered around the place. When I did a dry fit, they looked a lot better from the legs down, as much like moving Space Marines over to 32's, there was no more of that upsetting overhang on their feet. However, I wasn't so sure about the whole silhouette of the model on a 32 and whether Ork Boyz look large enough to justify them.

I will most certainly be moving my Nobz to 32's as they fit them very nicely, but I'd like to know what the community thinks about their appearance; do you lovely folk have any thoughts on this, or perhaps have even tried to do this yourself and have some advice to add?

I know that Necrons have been supplied with 32's now because of leg overhang, and their silhouette is even smaller than Boyz. And while I don't play 40k anymore, I am making my own game for my models and would like to know if you think this would put Orks at a serious disadvantage on the tabletop, given how many Orks you'll be playing with.

Thanks in advance for your replies!

from what I understand for ork boyz, the smaller is better for getting more models in base contact

I like the 32 for nobz because it makes them stand out even more from the ork boyz

anyway just my two cents

Yeah, I wouldn't bother for plain boyz, but bulky figures (lootaz, stormboyz, etc) could well benefit.

I'm still tossing these two options in the air, but I am starting some test models (including a Loota) to see how they look - I will post some pictures towards the end of the week

I mean, in the fluff, even a regular Ork boy almost always dwarfs an average Guardsman, which, being standard humans, are supplied on 25mm bases. By that logic, and by all fluff, I would say even Boyz belong on 32mm bases, as would Lootas and the like. Nobz, IIRC, are roughly the equivalent of a Terminator (as far as size scaling goes from the basic troops), and so I would say would look right on either a 32 or 40mm base, but that's just my opinion. I realize the models are the same height as a guardsmen, but the fact that Orks are always hunched over so that they lose almost an entire head's worth of height combined with the heroic scale system, I would say the Boyz would be much more accurate on 32mm bases.

Granted, I see the downside to this as far as gameplay as concerned. As Guildenstern said, getting all the Boyz into melee combat would be much easier with 25mm bases. It's just my opinion that bigger bases for Orks would be more accurate as well as...I guess aesthetically satisfying. To me, anyways

I agree, aesthetically Orks are looking really good on the 32's I've tested them with. I have already moved my Nobz to 32's, and they fit nicely - I think 40mm would be too large for them. The 32's get rid of the leg overhang, which is what I care about most; I don't play games with my collection atm so it doesn't concern me much that this could neuter them on the battlefield.

Ah, gotcha.

Well if gameplay mechanics aren't a big concern, then I can't really see a downside to the 32s lol
