An Igloo Deep North in Canada, eh?

Hey all,

Been out of the game for about 2 years at this point, and am debating whether or not I should dust off the old dice. Problem is I'm so out of the loop with everything that I'm not sure it's worth it; relearning all the rules is a hefty task so I want to get an idea of what the 'world' looks like before diving in. So my most important questions, in no particular order, would be:

1 - what edition are we in? I last played 6th if I recall right. Still there? 7th? 8th? And if we are still in 6th, what's the word on the next update?

2 - I played Eldar back in the day. What book are they in? Waveserpant spam was when I clocked out, what meta are they at right now? New book rumored when?

3 - current overall meta looks like what? I know there is always the netlists that break everything so I'm more asking about crowd favorites and go-tos than the lists that everyone walks away from. How's the popularity of the game? Wane, wax, same?

4 - cost is still ridiculously marked up?

5 - anything else I should know?

Thanks guys

Both players should be using the least durable units possible, with the house rule that all players remove an article of clothing every time you lose a unit, and take a drink every time you kill one of your opponent's units.
I have no idea which army will be triumphant, but I can assure you that everyone wins.

1, 7th.
2. Codex: Eldar Craftworlds.
Windrider bikes with scatter lasers + warp spiders + wraithknights if you want to go cheesy.
3. Scatbikes, IoM lists made from about 5 books is all I know. Others can say more.
4. Oh yeah.
5. Rules are pretty similar to 6 so relearning shouldn't be too hard. Except the Psychic Phase.

7th, some call it 7,5 due to the power creep since the necron codex.

2 - I played Eldar back in the day. What book are they in?

Eldar codex 7th.
Harlequins have a seperate 7th codex
FW has a new second edition book filled with eldar stuff. ( with even more OP Stuff)

Waveserpant spam was when I clocked out, what meta are they at right now?

You will be spamming these units now: bikes (dirt cheap, insane fast, troop and all can have heavy weapons),
warpspiders (can avoid being shot, or being assaulted by jumping away as a reaction)
wraightknights ( they buffed them )
any other unit is also near game breaking good, and you do have some insane formations to buff them all a bit more.

New book rumored when?

No rumors for a codex but there will be a campaign with lots of buffs.

3 - current overall meta looks like what? I know there is always the netlists that break everything so I'm more asking about crowd favorites and go-tos than the lists that everyone walks away from.

just take a look at the net lists

How's the popularity of the game? Wane, wax, same?

The game is a mess and popularity is at a all time low, due to the insane power gap between the codexes. Don't worry eldar book is still one big cheese fest, there are just a few more of them.

4 - cost is still ridiculously marked up?

kinda, regular kits are even more expenive then 2 years ago. But there is a plethora of box sets with actual good savings.

5 - anything else I should know?

-Most players like to play tactical objective missions. These are random objectives on cards that you draw every turn. Guess what this makes jetbikes so good its not even funny.
-Eldar are no longer battle brothers with TAU
-Formations are the thing now, forget thinking in CADS
-Wrightknigts are lord of wars now they are dirt cheap and can kill minor titans on their own.
-POWERCREEP has turned up to 11. Expect grav spam ( both in SM as admech armies), armies with free transports or upgrades, Imperial special rule stacking armies on bikes or wolves or just wulfen on foot, bigger nastier tau suits, even tougher necron units, daemons summon other daemon units and have some Inv sv shenanigans, imperial knights (mini titans) are accepted as normal models and can be spammed. Assault in turn 1 is a thing again with some builds, Tyranids mostly play flying hive tyrants with shooty stuff. The rest of the armies are lacking behingd
-GW released new FAQ's on faccebook they are currently in "first draft" mode
-Fliers have new rules not everyone likes to use them
-we are near a big campaign that is rumoured to be "game changing"
-There might be a 8th edition in the next year.

Not every single eldar player is a total dick, zoggy. I also would debate that 'every' unit in the codex is nearly game breaking considering the codexes that 80%+ of people use now are equal in OP or close to (space marines, eldar flavour combos, tau, necrons)

Now, to the OP. Costs of the models are still ridiculous, a new edition is rumoured to be on the way, and the current metas are very, very shooty focused. Melee armies are in a tough spot (BA, orks, nids) Meta for the eldar varies, if its casual games for fun people are actually able to take anything they want and still have a viable list, so I found there is a LOT more themed armies! Competitive is a gak show, do not bother unless you're going to be playing scatter laser bike spam and wraithknights or space marine super fwends, other armies get muscled out quickly.

Under the category of things you should know, the lawsuit between Games Workshop and Chapterhouse Studios finally ended with Games Workshop losing. As a result, GW has renamed a lot of their armies.

Imperial Guard = Astra Militarium
Space Marines = Adeptus Astartes
Sisters of Battle = Adepta Sororitas
Assassins = Officio Assassinorum

Also the Fantasy armies have gotten some renames but I'm not familiar with them.

As another result or coincidence, Chapterhouse Studios has/had a huge backlog for their orders. Or something. Whatever happened, there were reports of people waiting over a year to receive stuff they ordered.

Oh, and there's a non-Forge World version of the Adeptus Mechanicus now.

Thanks for all the replies. To be honest it sounds like things haven't really changed, at least in any way we were hoping for. Shame things continue to head down the "less popular" road, but what can be done?

Also really good to know the Chapterhouse lawsuit has a definitive close. That had been a long time coming.

I think I'll poke around the YMTC threads and see if I can see anything else that might be off-putting, but it sounds like, with the right people to game with, a game here and there might be worthwhile.

Thanks all.
