Why Aye Ya Canny Dakkanaughts!

I want to know what kind of armies the top players of each group use, what kind of armies do the wisest of 40k players use.

For myself, there is a large group of us who meet up during the week to either play 40k, cards or any other game someone has brought along. There are about 10 of us but it is myself and a (imperial playing scum!) friend of mine who run the 'club'. Within our group us two have lost the least number of battles and have been playing the longest.

What about you dakka? Who are your wise men, or are you the wisest?

(Please let me know if I have missed an important faction, thanks)

Also, even if you are all friends and there is no 'hierarchy' there must be one of you who is more of a 40k wizard than the others.

BONUS! - What faction is generally used those who either harly play the game or play it often but are, a bit rubbish? (It's Space Marines isn't it )

I'm undeniably the wise veteran of my group. I introduced almost everybody in my group to the game, and basically gave them their armies (or at least the beginnings of them).

When I introduced the game, I also introduced a series of house rules intended to tone down the worst excesses of the game. They've worked quite well thus far. We've had very few blowouts, and tight games are a fairly common occurrence.

I like to play thematically appropriate games, so my main armies are Dark Angels and Chaos Marines, with a smattering of IG that I don't use as much as I used to.

It's hard to pinpoint the veteran of our group. Those in the local 40k crowd that have been playing the longest haven't had much experience with the newer rules. So they're "vets," but they aren't necessarily "wise" in terms of current game rules.

I've probably been playing just a bit longer than many of my fellow players, but I probably don't have as much competitive experience.

Our most active local player with the know-how to play competitively is actually an ork player.

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

All of the vets play various shades of SM. Say what you like about 'em, but not just Timmys play them.

We've got three Mechanicus war convocations users, one full blue Tiggie Smalls + Battle Company/SkyHammer user, and the reining That Guy who has a fully forgeworlded eldar scatbike + friends army.

Some people find the idea that other people can be happy offensive, and will prefer causing harm to self improvement.

In the group of 20 somewhat people, there's me and two others. I do Necrons, Space Marines and the heretic counterparts. Then there's the Eldar person exclusively, and then this dude that has almost every army you could imagine. He can make so many lists you wouldn't bump into the same basic layout for maybe a month.

I'm trying to think but for the life of me I can't come up with anyone in my group who would be looked at as a 'wise veteran'
all the guys who have played earlier editions took long hiatus during fifth and sixth editions when the game died off in the area and often get tripped up by rules as they remember them, the rest of us have been playing around two and three years, rookies.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

I play at home against my mom and that's been my entire tabletop life since 2005.

Since I started 40k in 2001 and managed to get my mom into it more than 5 years later, I guess I'm the "wise" veteran.

And I cannot actually vote in your poll as the army I play is not on there.

Seriously, you could've just copied the list from GW's site if you wanted to provide every option.

Perhaps I wish to do it by memory so that I can learn all the faction names since so many come out each year and there are a lot of old less popular armies.
So which army was it I missed?

Did you base that correct guess on my forum title, or the forum experience to know that half the polls on this forum that try to offer every army as an option invariably forget Sisters of Battle?

I remember you talking about playing Sisters and I checked the poll for them. That and Sisters are usually forgotten as far as I can see. I've only seen their models once physically.

Well I am very sorry for forgetting your army, and kudos to you for running a SoB army effectively.

I'm sorry I snapped at you. It's a regular occurrence around here that army polls forget Sisters of Battle and I shouldn't have taken out my frustration on you.

However, you may note that I never said I run them effectively or even win most of my games. It's more that my local gaming group is composed of only two people, and the other person is an incredibly casual gamer who I taught to play 40k on my own.

If you're wondering how I frequently lose to an extreme casual gamer, it's because she's been playing strategy games for longer than I've been alive (in fact I have her interest in board games to owe for my entire existence), and doesn't change her army list until something proves ineffective, while I change my list drastically every game. And more to the point, she's actually better than me at 40k now. Also I'm more concerned with fluff and she's more concerned with winning games.

...And now I'm wondering if maybe I'm wrong about which of us is the wise veteran.

Not sure I count as wise but I'm somewhat of a Vet, one of the standing jokes being some of my Eldar models are older than some club members, this is true most of my Eldar infantry are circa 1987-1991 white metal

I tend to forget about SoB because I have never met someone who uses them unfortunetly.

Hope you two continue to have fun.

: D

I do assume that most people just forget they exist, I never think they did it as a deliberate slight against the army.

It's been me since I was 11, and I went from Eldar to Orks to KDK in about 15 years. (Eldar 2001-2007, Orks 2007-2015, KDK 2015-present). I collect a lot of models and sometimes use them when I'm introducing people to the game, like a little AM, Tau, SM or whatever.
