Yes, Quake was the first Pro Game; but Starcraft: Broodwar was the first institutionalized, TV-aired, accidental beast with teams and the whole nine-yards that would define what eSports would look like for years to come.
Yes, this game is old enough to have legal sex, get arrested, and grow out its sideburns if it wants to (In Freedom Land).
Yes, Starcraft II exists.
No, This game has not been given balance patches for over 14 years.
But, This game is back and is taking its territory back by storm. It never lost too much ground in Korea, being the preferred game at heart, but now Korea is shifting back into an age of Broodwar.

Flash, Jaedong, sea, Effort, HerO, Shuttle, Last, Best, Free, and more... players that have names in the different eras of Broodwar now collect again to claim their title. Linked above is the playlist for the English Commentary by Artosis, Tasteless, RapiD, Wolf, and assumably more for all of your enjoyment. Even if you haven't played Starcraft or know what it is, if you have any self-claim of being a gamer I highly recommend checking out this tournament on Youtube and on air Tuesdays/Saturdays on Twitch by AfreecaTV.

-----------------------------------

I have a deep love for this game, nothing will ever change that, and it will always be the rival of Mount and Blade: Warband in my heart. I started playing this game seriously again after a long time. I am now planning to play on the ICCUP servers where you can find all the non-Korean players, Fish being the Korean server where players go to get their dreams stomped or make it big. If you have ever wanted to start playing, I welcome you to the concept and I hope to see you on the servers. I am still deciding on my name for Laddering, whether to go with my Steam name or my old favourite.

I played Zerg in my High School's Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm (HoTS) team, but I am still not very good and only have had at most 80 APM...

-----------------------------------

Please, Starcraft Lovers of all walks of life, let the discussions and general "waves" begin!
Also, we can all agree that there shall be no warfare between Broodwar and Starcraft II because let us face it, they are both the best RTS game off all time. Not to discredit Command & Conquer Red Alert at all.

This is even better with the news that Blizzard will be remastering the original starcraft without altering any mechanics.

Honestly all starcraft 1 needed was to have the graphics of starcraft 2 and more of its pathing and similar. The special ability buttons in 2 seemed smarter than 1's.

I'd have to disagree. Starcraft 1's problems with pathing and what not are troublesome indeed, however this has accidentally made it the most balanced and evolving game of all time. The small control groups have naturally created a "comeback mechanic" because you get penalized for having a big army. The more successful you are, the more bases you have, the more units you have to baby, the more you have to manage. Because Starcraft 1 is "dumber" and needs more monitoring, it really accomplishes what Starcraft and RTS's are as games: An Organization Simulator.
If you were to change the pathing and stop these "bugs", you'd kill great portions of the game. This is why Blizzard is keeping every bug and "faulty" mechanic, similar to Bungee's Halo: Combat Evolved HD thing. The way the game is now is why Korea fell and stayed in love with Broodwar for 19 years, more so than the sequel though you cannot really compare the two because they are different styles of RTS due to their nature.

I also prefer the gritty feel of Broodwar to Starcraft 2's modernization, but that's just me. So I hope that Blizzard keeps it gritty and just polishes it a little to keep with the times a bit.

What I really want from Broodwar HD is to finally have a centralized multiplayer community and Ladder.

I admit i preferred the music and gritty dirty future that starcraft 1 was. It became to an extent more family friendly. Not massively so but those cutscenes featuring terrans could get insanely brutal. I suppose with graphics these days that would be the higher end of mature rated games. Blizzard sure has changed it's tone in cutscenes going for a more epic scale than gore filled.

Family-Friendly is not a bad thing at all indeed.

After playing on the ladder and getting up there, I am tempted to introduce Day[9]'s Funday Monday challenges (Broodwar-Edition) to ICCUP as I climb the ladder. Stuff like: Lift off your command center to a different base, Monobattle, Defensive Structures Only, Only Air, and other nonsense.

Damn the nostalgia. I've been watching the crap out of totalbiscuits King of the hill SC2 tournament lately, and this was a pleasant surprise. Damn SC1 had a good feel to it. The music, graphics and mechanics all felt so futuristic gritty.

His pattern of returning alive after being declared dead occurred often enough during Cain's career that the Munitorum made a special ruling that Ciaphas Cain is to never be considered dead, despite evidence to the contrary.

Sadly I will never get my wife to leave me alone long enough to play online. It's been about ten years since I played a match against another person. I still love the game, and I'm glad a modernized version is being released. I'd be happy if my old copy would display properly on Windows 7.

Oh dear god why. Just let it die. It was never a great game to begin with, it was always mediocre at best.

Because not everyone shares your opinion about it, it must be quite the shock I know

I never really got any further than the Sp campagin in broodwar, but its always nice to see games that I played when I was growing up still kicking around

I used to play this game religiously. It was the only time I really used battle.net for making lobbies and meeting people to play. I spent a lot of time playing custom scenarios.. I'm gonna have to look at the enhanced version because my nostalgia meter is going BERSERK!

That's my opinion of it, too. It was more of a pretty good game, but Brood War did little to make it better.
Other games are more worthy of the attention, but this one just got caught up as the one to play.

Sure you are. However, in a thread that is excited about it, making negative comments for really no reason at all is a bit childish and annoying. If you don't like it... move on. We don't need to hear about your lack of interest.

Then stop responding to me? Clearly if no one did the conversation would have went on without me continuing to post in here. I only posted to express my opinion, if you keep making me defend or elaborate on it, I'll keep posting.

Never said that you are forbiden to have an opinion, since I belive you do not live in the likes of Russia or North Korea. But your posting really makes people stand on edge. Much like if someone where to say something along those lines about a game you grew up with and still enjoy

If everyone reacted to every negative comment, then it'd be hell. While it is not necessary to post an opinion that might upset people on a thread that hasn't had anything to do with a given person, there is nothing stopping them from voicing their opinion.

Starcraft appeals to a specific taste and it finds its success in a happy accident. Other RTS's are good, but Pros latched onto Starcraft for what it brought to the table whether it meant to or not. Also, Blizzard has money and marketing and had such features back then too.

Anyways, before this turns into a 40k/Every-Forum-Thread-Ever....

If you are having graphics problems on Windows 7, I feel you. I have encountered these things:

1) The menu is glitchy BUT in-game is completely fine except occasional pink lines in water features.
2) ICCUP's Client fixes it all for you
3) A new program coming out called "Shield Battery" will be reinstating Broodwar with an integrated ladder and graphics fixes. It is in closed beta at the moment. Day9 has access and loves it so far.

I am pretty bad at this game but it does not stop me from loving to play. I have been turned into paste so many times, but that pasting brings a fiery challenge to my belly. I have the ICCUP client and am able to play online there, Battle.net also hosts but is thought to be lower quality connection than the ICCUP servers. While I could play on fish servers, I am too bad at the game to face koreans.

To all the new players, old players who are just now coming back and have lost their touch, D Rank players, and all the other "lower tier" players out there:

There is a New-Player League coming up that is being hosted through the TeamLiquid Community and using ICCUP launcher for the games/practice. Deadline to register is November 20th!!!

http://www.teamliquid.net/forum/brood-war/515865-sign-up-poll-coach-pupil-league

Basically, you can play in this league that will go for about 3 months. You will be assigned a team with similar time schedules as you* as well as a coach of B or A rank. You will train and then test your skills when the training period is over.

If you have ever wanted to get into Starcraft: Broodwar, there is no better way than this. I plan on entering if my internet and schedule can hold up!

* - if that poll wins, see link for more details
