Hi there Dakkanauts,
I'm going to travel to Prague next week with the girlfriend, and when I saw El Torro's thread (http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/699804.page), I thought of doing mine.

So, I will be to Prague (Czech Republic) for 5 days. Have you been in Prague ? Or do you live there ? Do you have any advice (a hidden / not well known place to go, something to visit, to AVOID ? ).

I already looked on the internet to see what to do, but if you guys have some own recent experience, it may be helpful !

Why Prague ? Because it seems to be a pretty beautiful city, with a lot charm and character, and it is affordable. I love to travel (France or others europeans countries only for the moment, but I hope one day to do a journey into africa and the USA).

Thanks for your attention !

I went to Prague about five years ago.

I'll be honest, I didn't enjoy it much, everyone there who wasn't a tourist looked at you like you'd just kicked their dog. I found out later on that apparently that's a cultural thing over there, if you smile too much, they think you're simple. Gave the place quite a miserable feeling though.

The beer is cheap and decent. The sausages are good. The tankards for sale on every other corner are overpriced tourist crap. Sauerkraut is revolting. Dumplings are a local specialty, and they have lots of different types, but I can't say I took to any of them. YMMV there. There's a lot of manky concrete Soviet style architecture the tourist guides don't show you. Most of the major attractions have English guides/translations, which is handy.

I went around two years ago, though not for as long as you're going (it was the end of me and my girlfriends little travels in Poland and Czech Republic involving Warsaw, Krakow, Brno and Prague).

The stuff we did was:

- A tour of the city on a riverboat and we joined a group to get a walking tour of the old town. This was fun, learned about the city and you get a great view of the bridges and buildings along the bank (and the penguins in the river ).

- The castle, though only the parts which were free such as the gardens and St Vitus Cathedral. So we didn't get to do the Golden Lane.

- We did pay to go into the toy museum in the castle though, as it was cheap and has one of the biggest collections of barbie dolls in the world (if you go make sure to find the Donald Trump barbie doll!) along with loads of old toys from loads of different times and some Action Men and GI Joes (including an astronaut one which me and my brothers had ).

- We did pedalos on the river which was fun. You can get some good pictures of the wonderful buildings along the riverbank. I also got complimented on my choice of footwear brand (Meindl) by one of the pedalo company people

- Charles Bridge. Loads of street artists and musicians, can get very crowded.

Even though Prague is more expensive than other parts of the Czech Republic, food and drinks are still pretty cheap as long as you can avoid the tourist traps. You should definitely try the local czech beers, such as Staropramen and Pilsner Urquell. These are cheap and, in my opinion, very good.
