Hi. Recently I finally worked up the nerve to try and get into the Warhammer 40k miniwargaming scene, and was immediately brought face-to-face with the Dark Vengeance starter set at my local shop.

Now, my shop is offering a deal where if I buy a Starter Paint set + Dark Vengeance, I'm given a free carrying case. But I want to know if the item they're selling is enough to fully paint this set or if I'll have to add on more paints from the shop to it. I don't want to spend a whole lot of excess money just to paint one SM.

Essentially, its the paint kit that you see in this picture.

The list of paints in that set (found here):
- Balthasar Gold (base)
- Abaddon Black (base)
- Armageddon Dust (texture)
- Macragge Blue (base)
- Agrax Earthshade (wash)
- Ceramite White (base)
- Leadbelcher (base)
- Mournfang Brown (base)
- Averland Sunset (base)
- Mephiston Red (base)
- Waaagh! Flesh (base)
- Zandri Dust (base)
- Bugman’s Glow (base)

That, plus the Chaos Black undercoat (the spray can), with a little mixing, should easily allow you to paint the Dark Vengeance set (depending on what colour scheme you choose to go for). Because most of the paints are Bases, that means they're slightly thicker and designed to go over things like a black undercoat with good coverage. The Texture paint basically has some sand added to it, and is useful for painting the model's bases (i.e. the round things they are standing on), whilst the wash will add depth to most things well. Adding a bit of white to some of the other paints on a pallet or pad (not adding it directly to the pot) will give you a lighter shade that you can use for highlighting. The pots are all about half the size (judging from the pictures) of a normal GW paint pot, but you shouldn't run out unless you're being way too heavy-handed. Always* thin your non-wash, non-texture paints slightly, usually with water, to improve flow and give you better coverage without lumping paint on.

In the immortal words of the Spice Girls "Stop right there...". Do not buy it! I went into the local GW yeasterday and the redshirts were humping everyones leg to flog DV. Being a naturally suspicious character that makes me think they have had orders from high up to shift immenently dead stock for a new release. At a guess...new CSM.

Please note, for those of you who play Chaos Daemons as a faction the term "Daemon" is potentially offensive. Instead, please play codex "Chaos: Mortally Challenged". Thank you.

Sooooooo..... doing their job?

They are trying to shift DV because its a good way to get into the hobbie for relatively cheap. That box is still the best way to build up an army on the cheap + GW stores run a deal where if you buy a starter box you get 30 bucks store credit so its almost dumb not to buy it if you are getting into the hobbie.

To answer OPs questions, yes those paint sets are more then enough to get you into the hobbie + if it gets a free case go for it, the cases are pretty damn nice.

As for the paints themselves its not going to get you amazing display quality paint jobs, but it will get you table ready for sure. Additionally if you want to run a pure Chaos army, you can do conversion on the Dark angels to make them fallen angels (Chaos space marines) So for the entire box, you are get a really big chaos army right off the bat. That said CSM are kinda weak so.

But, its a good buy, one of their better starter sets.

To many unpainted models to count.

So how many points would a CSM army made out of this set go to? Although I'm more interested in pure Dark Angels.

@ Backspacehacker: I agree, they are doin their jobs. But they seemed to be going pretty balls deep on flogging it. With rumours of TS and Magnus it makes me a bit suspicious.

It's been a while since I added it all up, but the chaos is about 500 and the dark angels are about 700. With the additional chaos champion added, I think that makes it 550-600 for the chaos?

As above, it's possible to convert the DA to chaos and use it as a purely chaos force. Otherwise just keep the DA as DA, and either sell the rest, assemble and paint it purely for the enjoyment (this is what I did with mine), or something else.

Yo Op what army do you want to play? Look into that first, the DV set is nice but if your wanting to play a different army it wont help that much. A good start is the $85 starter sets but if your interested in playing either chaos or DA the DV and painting thing is a pretty solid start.

The North

I was just about to go out, but then I felt a disturbance in space and time along with the smell of roses and death. Someone, somewhere had mentioned a new chaos release.

Multiple places trying to shift DV? It's been a similar story here for no particular reason given by the staff.

The DV set is a good place to start as any, though with the deals included in the 'get started' sets I'd be inclined to suggest one of them of a force that you like the look of - unless you specifically want two forces (and those to be chaos marines and Dark angels)

Plus the Chaos chosen are gorgeous. I'm buying a set of just those bitz just for some skirmish gaming, and it's been years of people begging GW for more Chaos marines that follow the same design scheme.
