Subject: 30K Proxies - Proxying Combi-Bolters on Betrayal at Calth Terminators (Firedrakes) for Combi-Weapons

Hey gang,
Normally I try to get things as close as possible to WYSIWYG for my models.
I've bought four Betrayal at Calth boxes to make two armies with, my family which includes my girlfriends young sons, and my brother, who love to play these games with me, and proxy rules at home are no big deal-
HOWEVER, I really don't want to magnetize the Terminators if I can avoid it for semi competitive to competitive play when I head out to game stores and the like. Especially since there's only 40K rules for Combi-Bolters, not upgrades to Combi-Weapons in Angels of Death.
Since I wanted the majority of my models to be able to play both 30K and 40K games to start...this poses a problem.
I'm playing Salamanders, and if I fielded Firedrake Terminators, they do have the optional rules to upgrade Combi-Bolters to Combi-Melta's or Combi-Flamers.
Do you guys think proxying things with detailed army lists for my opponents in this case would be acceptable? I'd like to spend money on a Spartan Assault Tank for them to ride in, instead of more magnets and bits in this case.
I know some people feel strongly about WYSIWYG...so I'd like honest opinions; but what is hope is that bringing printed lists of my army to give to new opponents when we play can mitigate that, if it's one of those deals where I have 50 points to spend, and nothing better to sink them into.

Really it depends on your gaming scene. Playing with friends doesn't matter. It probably won't matter at your LGS as long as you're very clear and up front about it (I'd ask around first though). Competitive tournaments will care however, and you'll have to build to your models to stay legal.
I'm considering the same thing with a Death Guard army and I'm just going to magnetize. Not only does it let you jump between 30-40K, but you can switch up wargear without having to buy whole new models just to get a chainfist or whatever. In the long run you will save money by magnetizing unless you never plan on changing your army.

Magnetising combi-bolters seem cheap and easy to me as they very nearly divide in the the middle but honestly I think the only place it would actually matter either way is in a tournament.

Yeah it will only matter in tournis. As long as you tell your opponent at the beginning so it isn't a surprise you'll be fine.

Ask your group.
Personally i would make my 30k stuff super wysiwyg and make em all bitchin lookin since i would rather be playing super narrative games with tons of pictures and scenarios
vs 40k which i just cant care for right now.

The main issue is that you would need to either upgrade all of the squad to the same combi-weapon or not upgrade any of them. If you only pay for upgrades to some of the models and don't make them WYSIWYG then you have no way of tracking which model has the upgrade. But if you say "all of my terminators have combi-meltas" then there's no ambiguity about it and most people would probably let you do it outside of a tournament.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices. |

It depends how you're taking them.
If you only have one squad of Terminators, and they all have the same combo-weapon, you're probably fine to just keep the combi-bolters and write it down on the army list (and flag it to your opponent).
If you have two squads in the same list, and each squad has different weapons, I'd want a visual signifier on the squad that says which weapons the squad has - whether that is an icon, a token, a magnetised banner with a picture of a meltagun on it, etc. I don't want to have to double check the list and remember which squad is "Squad A with the plasmas" every turn.
If you have different combo-weapons in the unit, they need to be modelled. It's not fair to ask someone to be looking through a list trying to figure out which individual model is the one with the Melta, and which one a standard terminator.

I would only field one squad of 10, or two of 5, both of which using the same combi weapon across the board in terms of proxy as a rule...I totally agree with this.
Part of me is putting my thinking cap on here to see about magnetizing, but I partially want to avoid it if possible on the grounds that losing tiny pieces of things irritates me. =P
