Subject: Proteus Ocularis - My WIP Marine chapter! :)
Hi everyone. First off, this is my first post here. I've been lurking and reading a bunch of topics hereabouts, and I wanted to share with you my semblance of a chapter right now. Now, it's not all finished, and I can't promise that it's very good, but this is what I have, and they seem alright by me. Of course, I welcome feedback and criticism. I've read bits and pieces of the codex here and there, so I can not promise that I am 100% lore-correct with all of this, but I've tried to make it seem not too crazy.
Anywho, here we go!
Chapter Name: (The) Proteus Ocularum
Why was it founded?: - Crusading chapter, reponse to frequent Imperial uprisings.
Founding: 32nd Millennium
Chapter Progenitor: Imperial Fists
Chapter Strength?: ~650 Marines, ~200 Scout / Initiates, ~1200 Support Crew/Technicians/Servitors
Chapter Base?: Fortress Monastery, Asteroid base on an elliptical orbit around the planet Chaspia, initially fleet-based crusaders.

This chapter’s gene seed has altered, resulting in an oversensitive occulobe. This has both blessed (and cursed) the chapter. All members of the order must utilize specialized optics in their helmets in order to effectively see in standard light conditions. If a battle-brother were to be caught without his helmet, and exposed his eyes to the natural light of either starships or planets will result in complete blindness while exposed. This unique issue has resulted in the chapter adopting several different pieces of equipment and training to compensate.
Battle-brothers wear helmets at all times – none expose themselves to light willingly. Marine scouts, traditionally unhelmeted, must wear enclosed helmets in order to fight in the field. Optical upgrades provided by the Adeptus Mechanicum have drastically improved marine tactical effectiveness.
All battle-brothers during their training and in their daily routine, spend at least one hour a standard day with their helmets off, training in blind fighting. This has led to an extremely effective assault and melee force, coupled with the effective optical superiority of ranged troopers.
The altered gene has also resulted in unique tactics in combat. Boarding tactics inparticular are impressive – chapters initially launch a boarding pod loaded with small robotic spiders. These spiders blast out of the pod and spread out into the crevices and wiring of the starship in question. These automata are programmed to seek out and sabotage onboard systems, particularly bulkheads and life support systems, as well as lighting. After few moments, the boarding pods containing the marines breach, and specialized assault squads move through the decks and clear. This tactic has been a foundation of chapter tactics – specialized assaults that are brutal and succinct.

Codex Adherent, some deviations
--Companies in the Proteus Ocularum operate differently from the outlines of the Codex Astartes. All ten companies operate on the same level. The 1st Company, traditional veterans, is instead compliant with the other nine companies in the chapter. Each company fields a variety of units that are able to operate efficiently whether in combined or separate situations. Companies 1-5 are considered operational companies, while companies 6-10 are deemed as reserve companies, often undermanned.
------Each company fielded incorporates veterans and initiates (scouts) alongside standard marines.
------Scouts provide tactical support to the general advance, (i.e. snipers, fast assault, etc)
- Name: Cassius Ocrenius
- Position: Captain, 2nd Company
- Deed of note: Led the campaign against an Imperial uprising on the planet of Chaspia during the 35th Millenium. This campaign was particularly brutal in orbit. Much of the rebellion was organized by planetary naval forces who had taken and overcome orbital defense stations and loyalist starships. While land based combat was furious, the Proteus Ocularum fleet faced the brute of combat. Captain Ocrenius led the orbital campaign, particularly in the storming and boarding of several rebellion starships. Of note is the boarding of the Flagship Imperial Battlecruiser Spires Rain. After several shattering broadsides, boarding pods were ejected into the flagship, and Captain Ocrenius himself led the charge in a brutal, deck-by-deck assault. Every man was slain where he stood, whether in surrender or defense. On the bridge, Ocrenius decapitated Admiral Jefren, effectively ending the rebellion. The end of the rebellion resulted in several changes for the Chapter, and for Chaspia itself.
o The resulting purge of the systems rebellious elements was extraordinarily efficient and thorough. The loyalist Imperial Guard elements on Chaspia cemented a strong alliance with the Proteus Ocularum.
o In the post-rebellion purge, the planetary governor of Chaspia was executed for failure in allowing the rebellion to begin, and failing to effectively stop it once it had begun.
o The Chapter, at this point in time a crusading chapter, decided to establish their base of operations in the Chaspian system. A captured asteroid in stable, elliptical orbit around the planet Chaspia, was established as the chapter headquarters.
o As the chapter settled in the Chaspian system, their strength was then reinforced for centuries – undermanned at the time of the Chaspian rebellion, many of the loyalist Imperial guard elements, established allies of the Chapter, would serve as effective recruits for generations of the battle-brothers.
Combat Doctrine - Drop Pod
Spoiler:
Combat Doctrine – Drop Pod
- The chapter combat doctrine is slated across the board on ground and in space. As the chapter has a history of naval combat, the drop and boarding pods are second nature to their tactics.
o In space, the chapter tactics are simple – cripple the enemy with broadside firepower, initiate a mechanicum sabotage automata boarding maneuver – once life support, lighting, and bulkheads are offline, assault squads are deployed to move through and eradicate the enemy, deck by deck.
o On the ground, chapter tactics focus on an initial orbital drop pod deployment of a tactical squad, supported by dreadnaughts and assault squads. Following this initial deployment, reinforcements are provided as needed – or in the case of taking advantage of an enemy mistake.
o The chapter frequently utilizes a legion era squad organization of breacher teams, utilizing bulky shields and swift assault tactics, this has proven to be effective in ship-to-ship boarding operations, as well as urban and tunnel combat in ground situations.
Beliefs, and Enemies
Spoiler:
Chapter Beliefs: Esoteric
- The chapter has unique beliefs associated with their gene alteration. The chapter views the blindness associated with their oversensitive occulobe as a gift of the Emperor. They believe the blindness is a sign of the chapter’s faith, and have never viewed it as a detriment or problem. In battle, assault marines have been known to willingly tear off their helmets, entering a faith-fueled berserker rage. As these marines have trained in fighting absolutely blind, these marines prove to be an unpredictable and effective foe for the enemies of Man.
- The Chapter has a history of quelling mutinies and rebellions on Imperial worlds. The chapter beliefs reflect this in their handling of traitors. Often many are put to the chainsword, slain nearly to a man. Commanders and rebellion leaders are often captured, and forcibly blinded – the chapter believing that by blinding these rebellious elements, they will be forced to submit to the Emperor for guidance.
Chapter Enemies – - The chapter has historically quelled rebellions throughout Imperial worlds. As such, traitor companies and renegade elements of the Imperial Guard have been the traditional enemies of the Proteus Ocularum.
Thanks for reading!

Pretty nice fluff so far. Its not to outlandish neither boring. I am not a huge fan of the Chapter colors since I don't think that yellow and grey match well (I would have used a light blue to simulate the color of eyes of many blind people instead of yellow). I wounder what's their relationship with other Imperial Forces and especially how they see astropaths.

This is some really nice fluff you've got here, and I hope you take this further.
There's only one thing I don't really understand: these guys are successors of the Imperial Fists, but they're colour scheme looks like it was inspired by the Space Wolves to me, was that intentional?
Other than that, sounds good so far.

Hello and welcome to Dakka first of all. I like what you have shown so far. particulary the part about the ligth sensitivity, a thing one very seldom sees used and shows that you have put effort into making them stand out amongst the crowd in a good way. Also like your description of their tactics, so please more.
And I also wonder if they are inspired by the sons of Fenris?
